On the surface, the debut album from British duo Zero 7 evokes the down-tempo diversions of Air's Moon Safari: Both records take smooth, keyboard-driven trips in search of some decades-old analog idea of the future. But where Air revel in the ersatz, referencing cheese-ball soft rock and French porn, Zero 7 vibe on rare grooves ranging from Roy Ayers' cosmic Seventies jazz to Ray Charles' soul; the result is a warm human funk that counteracts the group's spacy soundscapes. Vocalists Sia Furler and Mozez bring real soul to songs such as "This World" and "Distractions"; the tracks' descending bass lines, dub style and John Barry-soundtrack symphonics rival Portishead in their desperate melancholic grandeur. "Polaris" evolves from tinkly makeout music into burbling techno porn, showing Zero 7 are not afraid of the dark side of a tune. More like jazz on acid than acid jazz, Simple Things can be hallucinatory yet eminently listenable; it's chill-out music with a little something for your mind as well.
