Mariah Carey embraces her extremes: She's either grinding out R&B-hop or singing syrupy ballads, talking dirty or cuddling with a Hello Kitty. Her tenth studio album is no different: It starts in a club and ends in a church. Carey tries on reggae with Damian Marley's scorching "Cruise Control" cameo, conjures a text-message title for Swizz Beatz's flute-loopy "O.O.C." ("out of control") and dials cool Seventies soul with "I'm That Chick" (where she compares herself to ice cream, Tupac and a blunt). She sounds the freshest when she fires up her Tommy Mottola resentment on the bumpy, Young Jeezy-assisted "Side Effects" and lives the high life on Danja's hard-hitting head-nodder, "Migrate," which dabs her vocal with Auto-Tune. But nearly every song confines Carey to four-note verses, offering little room for her glorious range, and the six ballads are drenched in yearbook-quote lyrics that never quite work themselves into the froth of The Emancipation of Mimi. Yet 2008's Mimi is also about redemption, and she brings it on the closer, "I Wish You Well," proving all she needs is a piano and a few Bible verses to save somebody — most likely herself.

Mimi's new album isn't her best. She was in her glory days in the 90s, and this is a clone of her 2005 album. Her voice isn't explored as it was before, and she lets out a screeching screech on the opening track. Stand-outs are "Migrate," "Touch My Body," "Sife Effects" and "O.O.C."

YES..... SHE'S BACK."TOUCH MY BODY" IS A LOT OF FUN AND THE MARIAH WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE. "MIGRATE" IS JUST COOL,BUT COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THE CAMEO BY T-PAIN. DA BRAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO LISTEN TO HERE, BUT SHE IS INSTEAD RELEGATED TO AN OUTTAKE CALLED "4REAL4REAL", WHICH IS JUST AWFUL AND MARIAH'S WORST COMPOSITION. THE MAJORITY OF THIS ALBUM IS SASSY R'N'B WITH ALMOST A GOSPEL FEEL. BUT THE SURPRISE,AND THE ONE THAT TOUCHED ME WITH IT'S TRUE BEAUTY IS THE MAJESTIC AND WONDERFUL "SIDE EFFECTS". THIS IS A PURE PIECE OF JOY THAT I LIKED. ALL TOGETHER A NOTABLE EFFORT THAT TRIES A LITTLE TOO HARD TO BE TO SOULFUL BUT AFTER A FEW LISTENS GELS TOGETHER.

Well, one thing is for sure, Mimi is back. The album is very good (not great though). It is full of potential hits. The thing with this album is you have Mariah Carey (i.e. I stay In Love, Love Story, I'm That Chick, Last Kiss, For the Record, Bye Bye). And then you got Mimi (i.e. Migrate, TMB, Cruise Control, Thanx 4 Nothin, Side Effects, O.O.C.) You continuaslly bounce from the club to the tear- jerking ballads, she's not sure where to go.The final track 'I Wish You Well' dosent seem to fit with the rest. And man, do they really dowplay the Voice that got her so big in the first place. But the album grows heavily on you, once you start, good luck stoping. I personally enjoy the album, why the negativity? Im just trying to give you a reliable review. But you can definatly count on Mimi to be here a very long, long time, she aint going anywhere soon. Xcept for the top of the charts. Go buy the album, you would regret it or waste your money... Many ear-worms for ya :)

Absolutely outstanding!!!

She delivered very well. I was nervous at first when i listened to Touch My Body because i thought it wasn't a really good 1st single, but then it grew on me.

I won't be surprised if she has more #1s because this album is full of potential singles.

I recommend

Cruise Control
Love Story
For The Record
I'm That Chick
Bye Bye
O.O.C.
Side Effects
Thanx 4 Nothin'

those are the best.

at least 3 of those after Bye Bye, will be singles..

:D

This CD is a dissapointment. It's just all sorts of awkward. And this is somebody who, with Mariah, "go back like babies and pacifiers." And it's a shame because for the first time in what may be ever, Mariah Carey, with her appearance on tonight's episode of American Idol, came off as someone who is relatable, knows what's up, and is far from girlishly aloof. And many of the performances, particularly those by Kristy Lee Cook, David Cook, and Jason Castro showed just how majestic and vast her back catalogue is.

But the future?

Yeah...

...I don't know dawg.

I have never been on Team "damn, Mariah done gone hip-hop. I sho' do wish she would act like she could sing and stop whispering". No. But this whole album seems a bit, off. Few things gel, MC sounds tired in parts, and often, it seems, surrounded by "yes" producers and songwriters who drown her in tiresome, easy route taking lyrics and production. Don't get me wrong, it has a few high points, but even when Mariah Carey fans thought she was at the height of her "damn Mariah done gone Hip-Hop" phase, it didn't seem as lazy and uninspired. [I swear I heard I Stay in Love on Janet's Discipline disc.] Cause let's be real, this album ain't that much better than [or as good as] Rainbow, Charmbracelet, or Glitter.

".verses to save somebody — most likely herself, "
So thats what she gets for having the balls on speaking on something that she believs in and stands for? I hope you are an atheus writting stupid things like that obviously you are if you take peronal shots at a proffesional in a half assed review. "drenched in yearbook-quote lyrics" did you actually listen and hear with your ears? good thing she makes her songs for herself and her loyal fans who actually know and understand what she is talking about.
If you listened to the cd more than once and actually had an open mind then maybe you would have enjoyed it, but hey no problem MAN I guess it just wasnt your cup of tea.

This Mi Mi Moo Moo has no depth, she sounds the same album after album, there is no growth. I can't wait until she has another break down.
Pariah Scarey is going to crack soon!

How better to put it than genius!!! It was puzzling how the Emacipated Diva would return to the music world, but time after time she continues to prove why she consistently racks up the #1 hits! E=MC2 the name itself proves Mariah has finally started using a little more creativity in her album titles (Thank God) lol! Regardless of her past album names Mariah definately hits the spot with this one! And the creative hip pop flavor she has on this one is truely addictive!!! Her catchy 18th #1 hit "Touch My Body" is the lead off to what could be a very radio friendly album for Ms. Mimi I must say, possibly more that Mimi part one!!! With club JAMZ like "Migrate", "O.O.C.", and the mind ringing "Loving You Long Time" her true fans are going to absolutely lose their minds, and she's sure to gain plenty more! The ballads are so heart felt wit songs like "I Stay In Love", "For The Record", and the touching "Bye Bye" it won't suprise me if she either ties the Beatles, or surpasses them after everything is all said and done! She suprises everyone with a little reggae on "Cruise Control" and disco with "I'm That Chick", and definate R&B smashes with the songz like "Thankx 4 Nuthin", "Love Story", and the seemingly most personal song on the album featuring Young Jezzy in "Side Effects"! Some critics may look for growth or just want Mariah to belt out those songs like she use to earlier in her career, but in my opinion Mariah has never really been able to escape the harsh critique by the critics. Ms. Mimi should'nt care to much cause i predict this will be another award winning, record breaking year for the Emacipated Diva! 5 stars from me!!!
