Down In New Orleans  Hear it Now

RS: 3.5of 5 Stars Average User Rating: 4of 5 Stars

2008

The fusion of the Blind Boys' Deep South gospel with New Orleans funk, R&B and jazz (guests include the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Allen Toussaint) creates a superweapon of roots-music uplift: Full-throated versions of standards such as "I'll Fly Away" and "Down by the Riverside" will raise goose bumps even on the tatted-up arms of resolutely futurist hipsters. Bonus: The opening track, "Free at Last," somehow grooves exactly like Steely Dan.

Wow, I could smell the inside of my old country church when listening to this album. What a great slice of Americana. I don't believe any of the superstitous dogma any more, but I still love those old songs. And the authentic New Orleans treatments make me want to head straight for the Vieux Carre. If you're not from the South and weren't raised in the small-town Baptist culture that is so prevalent there, you might not have as strong a feel for this album, but if you are, you be knowin' what I means...
