British DJ duo Lemon Jelly announced their approach in 2001 by transforming Chicago's sappy ballad "If You Leave Me Now" into an epic of big-time sensuality. Now Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin arrive with a second album that feels like a widescreen Technicolor dream. "Ramblin' Man" offers vicarious thrills for the bong-bound armchair traveler, as a wizened old sage recounts globetrotting from Rangoon to Rotterdam over a twinkling beat. "The Curse of Ka'Zar" is a horns-galore fanfare featuring two competing drum loops that, when the bass line is added, suddenly sound complementary. This sort of delightful, alchemical sound design permeates Lost Horizons. In the ranks of sampler-wielding duos, Lemon Jelly have sailed over Air into their own rarefied space.
