New York-area classic-country radio hostess Laura Cantrell moonlights as a graceful troubadour in her own right, singing songs that are simple but not precious, with a voice that's sweet and invested in the material without sounding twee. There's hardly a musical misstep on this, her second album, a decidedly forlorn set of lost-love tales that never lacks for charm. "Too Late for Tonight" and "Early Years" both capture the shiver of love just out of grasp. Cantrell negotiates tricky mandolin picking on "Mountain Fern" and mournful strings on "Broken Again," giving each its own fitting melancholy. This Nashville native isn't above a slick double entendre -- "I'd like to buy the world an aspirin/And slip it in their Coke" -- but more often she's dead earnest. It's as if a lifetime of romantic disappointments has left her incapable of putting up any pretenses.
