The Academy Is . . . are five suburban Chicago young’uns with excellent connections (they’re on Fall Out Boy’s label) and a major-label debut that offers big, not-exactly-emo songs with high hook quotient and a well-modulated guitar attack. When Santi is good (on “We’ve Got a Big Mess on Our Hands” and “Neighbors”), they’ve got a sugar-shot late-Eighties pop-rock appeal, but most of the album is forgettable, or worse: Songs like “You Might Have Noticed” are annoyingly dark and whiny, and a couple of cuts – including the T-Rex-y “Bulls in Brooklyn” – dip into classic rock but don’t give you much else of interest. Singer William Beckett’s swoops and swoons are part of the problem – anyone who moans about laying an “existential kiss upon your neck” has some ’splaining to do.

okay. i'll be blunt about it...

this review is crap.
i have the cd and it's amazing.
my dad who hates this kind of music said that he likes the cd to! he loaded onto his mp3.

who ever reviewed this was drunk at the time they listened to the album or didn't even listen at all.

obviously the person reviewing this album doesn't like alternative/"emo" music. so it's not fair that they give this album a bad review.

once again.
this review is crap!

The Academy Is...'s sophmore album 'Santi' is a slightly refreshing twist. While their debut album 'Almost Here' gave us more of a mellowy upbeat sound, 'Santi', gives a mixture of a few different things. While the song "We've Got A Big Mess On Our Hands" makes you want to jump up and start dancing around, they also have songs that make you want to put up your hands and sway, "Everything We Had". William Beckett's vocals are, I admit, a bit ameature, but, an improvement from what we heard on their first album. I think that this band is up and coming to a lot of fame.

I'm sorry, but did your reviewer actually listen to the cd? While I am a huge fan of the bands debut album Almost Here, I find Santi to be a refreshing progression. Almost Here, while offering some great lyrics and catchy tunes lacked the depth displayed in Santi. The diversity in songs on Santi is incredible, and the style of the cd is something that is lacking in today's music industry of hip hop and dance punk. The boys of The Academy Is... made a cd that is a true reflection of themselves, unlike others (such as Fall Out Boy) who sold out with their latest album releases.

the rolling stone review is dissapointing. while i don't think this album has quite the catchyness of almost here, the album has more depth to it. also i find it funny that the reviewer said the best two songs were "we've got a big mess" and "neighbors" which just so happen to be the two singles. "chop chop" "sleeping with giants" and "lax" are great songs and i would say far better than the two singles. all in all this album is pretty solid and while it may not be as catchy as almost here, it may appeal to a wider audience.

When I first bought the cd, I could barely listen to each track fully. As a big Academy Is.. fan, I was expecting some of the catchy hooks and loveable cliche lines from William, but all I got were a couple of good foot tapping songs [LAX, Big Mess, Neighbors], and the rest were a bit boring. To be honest, it took me at least 3 weeks for the album to catch on to me, and that was AFTER I saw them in concert.

I felt like they tried to hard on this record. I bought the cd, but couldn't even listen to the songs all the way through. So many were painful to listen to and generic. They should've stuck with what they had. It was working for them. Now they're just faux-classic rock. And that's the worst type of rock.
