As a home to artists like Mastodon and the Dillinger Escape Plan, Relapse Records has proved itself a haven for the kind of dense, experimental metal that has helped the genre appeal to a broader fan base in recent years. With Alabama Thunderpussy, the label seems to be going back to metal's core audience, those with a taste for stoner-rock riffs, screeching vocals, Viking-themed album covers and, well, band names like Alabama Thunderpussy. Guitarist Ryan Lake can shred with the best, often navigating thick Sabbath-y soup but also noodling lengthy, bluesy solos worthy of the Allman Brothers or tapping out Eddie Van Halen-style excursions.
