Dreamgirls Music From The Motion Picture  Hear it Now

RS: 3of 5 Stars

2006

This soundtrack to the film about the rise and fall of a Supremes-like girl group - with Beyonce in the Diana Ross role - offers some of the lovable Sixties pop you'd hope for. Easy-grooving stuff like "Steppin' to the Bad Side" and the Eddie Murphy-sung funk workout "Cadillac Car" are good facsimiles of vintage Motown. One problem: Dreamgirls began as a Broadway musical, and the soundtrack reprises much of the so-so original material, which means there are annoyingly showy tunes and clobber-you-over-the-head ballads amid merely decent R&B like "Family." "Listen," one of three new songs here - and one of the best things on the album - finds Beyonce getting her Whitney Houston on. Timbaland beats would seem a bit anachronistic. But a little more new material might have helped.
