For Neil Young, 1970 proved to be a particularly busy year. In addition to touring the world as a solo acoustic act and with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, as well as recording two pivotal albums (After the Gold Rush and Deja Vu), he managed to squeeze in a few gigs with Crazy Horse. Six of the best takes from two torrid shows at the Fillmore East on March 6th and 7th are available on this CD, which is the first-ever archival release from Young's bulging vault. Epic jams on "Down by the River" (twelve minutes long) and "Cowgirl in the Sand" (sixteen minutes) are highlights of the disc, which also contains "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," "Winterlong" and "Wonderin.' “The guitar interplay between Young and original Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten is breathtakingly sharp; Young has played with countless other guitarists since Whitten died in 1972, but nobody has come close to matching his ragged-glory style.

i very much enjoyed down by the river and cowgirl in the sand....however....don't buy the dvd/cd as it is a scam. there is no live video. it is merely photos with the soundtrack played over it. do not buy this for the video as it is a waste of money. buy the cd instead. the cd gets 4 stars, the video gets zero stars.

The cold war gave us the "Kremlin Watchers". neil Young fans are pretty much the same. We are searching for the small tidbits that give us an idea of who neil is. oh yes he feeds us all the time. This record is such an object. it is all right here! the way in wich he introduces Mr Whitten gives us the amount of pain that he will feel. After listening to this recording go straight to "Tonight's the Night" and get the whole picture.

I can't honestly review the CD until I get it upon its release. For now, however, having heard more of this show (including the acoustic portion, on bootlegs), I want to express my disappointment that Neil is releasing only a chintzy one-disc portion. This was supposed to be part of the first massive "Archives" box, and it just seems so disappointing that, after wanking us with promises and postponements of that release for some 20 years, he finally releases just this sliver, good as it may be!
