Fleetwood Mac mastermind Lindsey Buckingham's fourth solo album came out on his fifty-eighth birthday, and he gave himself a hell of a present. With its skewed pop melodies, home-brewed sonic trickery and blazing fingerpicking, Under the Skin is a mesmerizing return to the side of Buckingham that birthed the proto-indie-pop strangeness of 1979's Tusk. Through most of the album, he achieves maximum effect from minimal arrangements, from the Smile-like carnival of vocal harmonies that enliven "It Was You" to the clicking hand percussion and trippy echo effects of "Show You How." Only one song, the rootsy "Down on Rodeo," gets more expansive production -- and it deserves it, thanks to a gorgeous, sun-splashed chorus that sounds like a lost Fleetwood Mac hit.
