These Cali boys are joining Sugarcult and other “post-hardcore" bands in their assault on the charts, racking up sales and MySpace hits: Saosin are less songful than, say, Taking Back Sunday, but nearly as ass-kicking. Saosin’s spidery, riff-rocking attack is brawny and nuanced, and they know their way around a big chorus - barnburners like “It’s So Simple" and “Come Close" will give you a dark head rush. But the band cheeses out on the ballads, especially “I Never Wanted To" and the inspirational “You’re Not Alone," and by-the-numbers shredders like “Follow and Feel" sound like they should have been left on the Warped Tour. At their best, Saosin get by on sheer intensity, but their yowling takes a toll over the course of an entire album.
