The Senate Committee on Intelligence's report on the absence of Saddam's connections to Islamic extremists is devastating:
In prewar assessments, the Intelligence Community had little specific intelligence that revealed Saddam's personal opinion about dealing with al-Qaida. Instead analysts looked at Saddam's record of support for secular terrorist organizations like the Palestine Liberation Front. At the same time, analysts noted that "Saddam viewed Islamic extremists operating inside Iraq as a threat, and his regime since its inception has arrested and executed members of both Shia and Sunni groups to disrupt their organizations and limit their influence."
Saddam was/is an evil mofo, an honest to God facist. But as far as the seeking to exterminate the threat of the Sunni and Shia fundamentalism — the threat that now goes by the neologism "Islamo-fascism" — went, he was on the same page as Bush.
