"No Attempt to Militarize the Border"

That's the bizzaro spin from Bush press secretary Tony Snow on the president's new proposal to send as many as 10,000 armed military personnel from the National Guard to patrol the border with Mexico.

Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel has by far the sanest take on this misuse of the military to pander to the the president's restive base:

"We've got National Guard members on their second, third and fourth tours in Iraq. We have stretched our military as thin as we have ever seen it in modern times. And what in the world are we talking about here? Sending a National Guard down to protect borders? That's not their role."
