Election '06: The Closest Race in the Country

By |

66 votes. That's all that separates Democrat Joe Courtney and Republican incumbent Rob Simmons in Connecticut's 2nd district race. More than 250,000 people voted, and it comes down to 66 votes. That's after an error was discovered — reading the total from a voting machine — that had artificially inflated the Democrat's total by 100 votes.

The tragic thing is, no matter who wins, there's no assurance that that was actually the will of the people in the district. In today's system 66 votes is entirely within the margin of error. And that's shameful. We're all lucky that the Virginia senate race wasn't this close.
