Do You Trust the President? Or "The New York Times"?

Given a seemingly never-ending war on terror —now approaching a sixth year —how can the press balance its duties to readers with the needs of a White House in a battle crouch?

A Slate story today balks at the call to muzzle a sensitive story —think Abu Ghraib, wire-tapping, secret prisons — when Bush's office demands secrecy. But as a plot is revealed to bomb one of New York City's major tunnels, a little respect for the administration makes at least partial sense.
