Mission Accomplished?

From today's WaPo:

The U.S. military believes it has dealt devastating and perhaps irreversible blows to al-Qaeda in Iraq in recent months, leading some generals to advocate a declaration of victory over the group, which the Bush administration has long described as the most lethal U.S. adversary in Iraq.

Um. So. Like. If Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated. Can we come home now?

Seriously. Our sole military objective in Iraq today is to prevent it from becoming another pre-9/11 Afghanistan. And while it has failed to pacify the competing power-hungry factions within Iraq, the surge appears to have done one thing: convince the Sunni tribal leaders to turn on Al Qaeda.

If that part of the fight has gone well enough for us to consider a declaration of victory... what are we still fighting for?
