Anti-Terror Tool Turned on Muckrakers


I had been feeling that the controversy surrounding the USA Patriot Act was incredibly overblown —particularly in light of the almost unfathomable privacy abuses perpetrated by the NSA's domestic spying.

But now it seems the Patriot Act is being exploited by the FBI to root out reporters' confidential sources, by conducting telephone searches that no longer require a judge's authorization.

As a senior federal official told ABC:

"It used to be very hard and complicated to do this, but it no longer is in the Bush administration."
