Rock & Roll Refugees: 10 People Who Escaped the Music Industry
NAME: Robert Wieger
FORMER JOB: Vice president of marketing, Atlantic Records. "I was in the music business 16 years. The AOL Time Warner merger came along and they started downsizing a lot of departments. We were pretty top-heavy in our department — we had three vice presidents. I came to work one day in 2001 and they said, 'Today's your last day at work.' I was paid a nice severance package."
CURRENT JOB: Door captain, Bacara Resort & Spa, Santa Barbara, California. "It's a management job, so I'm not out there parking cars. I do budgeting and scheduling and hiring and firing and a lot of day-to-day stuff. It's funny — I run into people I used to work with all the time. When I was at Arista, I worked with Barry Manilow, and Barry has checked into the hotel with his manager before."
