Fall Music Preview 2007: Bruce Springsteen, James Blunt, Alicia Keys and More
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
Raising Sand
Out October 23rd
When Robert Plant duetted with blue grass singer and fiddle player Alison Krauss at a 2004 Lead Belly tribute, he was blown away by their chemistry. "Her voice has a fragility that intrigued me," he says. Their new disc of duets, recorded by T Bone Burnett in Nashville and L.A., ranges from Tom Waits' "Trampled Rose" to the Jimmy Page/Plant tune "Please Read the Letter." Krauss and Plant harmonize throughout, which was a challenge for the Led Zep howler. "I didn't know whether to burst into 'Immigrant Song' or 'The Ocean,' " he says. But Krauss helped Plant discover how to adjust his voice to the material -- and he helped Krauss on the bluesier numbers: "She'd go, 'Robert, I'm too white to sing "Rich Woman." ' I said, 'Honey, it's just coming out.' And out it came."
