After winning fans with their Shins-meets-My Morning Jacket debut, Band of Horses convened in a converted church in Asheville, North Carolina, to record the follow-up. Cease to Begin alternates between big-ass tunes ("Is There a Ghost") and quieter tracks, including the gorgeous ballad "Detlef Schrempf." Though the song is named after the German NBA player, the lyrics were inspired by frontman Ben Bridwell's move from Seattle to his native South Carolina. "That song is about closing the door on the past," he says. "I think that's the focus of the record, reflecting on moving back home."
