"It's my own stupid fault, as usual," Michael says in a statement. "I was in possession of class C drugs, which is an offence, and I have no complaints about the police, who were professional throughout."
The singer posted bail and may be charged in late March, pending an investigation. If convicted, he faces two years in jail and an unlimited fine.
Michael -- who has sold more than eighty million records worldwide, both as a solo artist and the former frontman for Eighties duo Wham! -- had a previous run-in with the law in 1998. In April of that year, he was arrested for participating in a "lewd act" in a public bathroom in Los Angeles. The incident prompted the pop star to end speculation about his sexuality and announce that he is gay.
Michael is expected to marry his longtime partner Kenny Goss early this year.
