Richard was a huge fan of Louis Jordan, who recorded this song in 1939 (he got it from James Wiggins and 1930s bluesman Kokomo Arnold). Jordan's version was smooth jump blues, but Richard changed the rhythm from swing to stomp and packed in whooping vocals, a roaring saxophone and unbridled energy.
