Springfield was white and English but sang as if born with black American soul. In 1968, with producer Wexler, she went to Memphis, the mecca of Dixie R&B, to record Dusty in Memphis. She ended up doing her vocals in New York, but no matter: On this gospel-tinged jewel, her deep, heated voice captured the carnal fire of the South.
