The cheery "sha-la-la" chorus of "Brown Eyed Girl" brought Morrison to the top of the pop charts. And he hated that. "It put me in some of the worst joints I ever worked," he told ROLLING STONE in 1970. "It just put me in some awkward positions. Like lip-syncing to the record on a television show. I can't lip-sync." Morrison turned his back on mainstream pop success: His next album, the masterful Astral Weeks, was a deeply personal acoustic song cycle that sold practically nothing.
