Richards' opening, strummed on an electric-acoustic guitar modeled after a Chuck Berry favorite, conjures an aura of dread unparalleled in the Stones canon. Then singer Merry Clayton brings down the apocalypse with a soul-racked wail: "Oh, murder, it's just a shot away." The song surfaced within days of Meredith Hunter's murder at Altamont.
