Third Eye Blind debuted songs from their third album, Out of the Vein (due May 13th), at the Roxy in Los Angeles Thursday night as part of Rolling Stone's Private Concert Series. Among those in the crowd was Vanessa Carlton, 3EB frontman Stephan Jenkins' current flame.
In addition to past hits like "Never Let You Go," "How's It Going to Be" and "Semi-Charmed Life," the band unveiled songs like "I Keep Forgetting Myself" -- Jenkins' "indictment of life in LA" -- "Palm Reader," and "Crystal Baller," which was once slated to be the album's title track.
"There's so many references on this album to palm readers, horoscopes and all this kind of romanticized mysticism," Jenkins said before the show. "I'm not really into that shit -- I just like the metaphor of trying to communicate with people that you can't anymore. And I thought being a 'crystal baller' meant somebody with style and grace who had a hand in his own providence, somebody who could stride confidently into the future. Isn't that what we'd all like to be?"
The show served as a warm-up for Third Eye Blind's Within Arm's Reach tour, set to begin April 7th in Toledo, Ohio. The twenty-city trek will place the band in more intimate venues, and fans can purchase tickets through e-Bay and bid on packages that include meeting and touring with the group.
"I'm shy and insecure as all people are, but when I'm on stage with a mike and I'm singing full-bore, I fear nothing," Jenkins said. "When you play small places, you're within arm's reach, and you are naked to God and the guy who's listening to you, and you better bring it. I kind of like that challenge."
