VAST's first album in nearly four years Nude will make its way into record stores on February 24th. The follow-up to Music for People will be the flagship release for 456 Entertainment, a new record label started by Carson Daly and former Loud Records head Jonathan Rifkind.
Essentially a one-man band, VAST's Jon Crosby worked on the record throughout 2003. Last year he offered two sets of ten demos -- titled Crimson and Turquoise -- for sale on realvast.com at $3 per set. Eight Turquoise cuts and four from Crimson were further developed for Nude.
After releasing two records on Elektra, Crosby enjoyed the experience of releasing music via the Internet, especially receiving the instant feedback. "I think the most pleasant surprise is with some of the songs that people say they love, but I don't necessarily hear it," he says. "When I have a song I feel strongly about that people don't like, I'll still put it on the record. I'd just go insane if I thought too much about what each one said. But it is nice to hear positive feedback about a song that I might not have cared about as much. It's amazing the things that people come up with. That's always been reserved for press."
Crosby also says the experience of making Nude pushed him to speed up his recording/releasing process. "I don't feel like waiting any more," he says. "I don't plan to wait three years to release a retail record. I used to be more about perfectionism, quality being better than quantity. In the end I realized I'd rather put out more work. It seems like my favorite artists don't wait too long between records."
456entertainment.com is offering a limited edition version of the album prior to the record's retail release. The first 2,500 copies were signed by Crosby.
