With notable exceptions, the second Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will be a hip-hop and electronica happening. However, the event will be headlined by a four-years-dormant Jane's Addiction and pocket-protector popsters Weezer, with Paul Oakenfeld and Fatboy Slim as the top-billed DJ's. The show will go down April 28th at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California.
Promoters announced the finalized, powerhouse lineup today, a mere two days before tickets go on sale. Among the other artists slated for the event are Chemical Brothers, the Orb, the Roots, Roni Size's Reprazent, Gangstarr, Mos Def, Tricky, Iggy Pop, Aphex Twin, Dandy Warhols , Blonde Redhead, Pedro the Lion and Euro-DJ heroes Kruder & Dorfmeister.
The Jane's Addiction announcement comes as a surprise to many who'd assumed their 1997 "relapse" to be a one-time deal. As with that tour, original bassist Eric Avery will abstain and Red Hot Chili Pepper Flea will fill his slot.
The initial Coachella Festival, held at the same venue in October of 1999, drew the likes of Rage Against the Machine, Beck, Tool , Morrissey, At the Drive-In, Pavement and Modest Mouse. A live album culled from the event has been pushed back several times but now looks to be ready for the summer. This year's show will likewise be captured for a future release.
