(MADRID) - Spain's first music awards, the Premios de la Musica, were presented April 10 in Madrid. The top honoree was Universal Music vocalist Rosana Arbelo, who won in the categories for new artist, new composer, and best pop/rock album. Veteran guitarist Paco de Lucia won best flamenco artist, the monks of the Santo Domingo de Silos monastery took the classical music award, and singer/songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat was awarded a special lifetime achievement prize. Worldwide smash single "Macarena" by Los Del Rio failed to win an award; the "international event of 1996" went to a concert series honoring classical composer Manuel de Falla. The only non-Spanish prize was the Latino award, won by Gloria Estefan.
