Lords of Acid frontwoman Nikkie Van Lierop talked to JAMTV before taking the stage at Chicago's Riviera Theatre last Friday. She divulged some "little secrets" about the tour as well as how the band's live act and new album contribute to the growing popularity of techno in America.|

Like the other shows on their 40-plus date U.S. tour, which ends on Dec. 14 in Los Angeles, the Chicago "sex-tacle" was a no-holds-barred event, just like Van Lierop wanted.

One example of her willingness to please is the "booty smack." Van Lierop explains the process: "We tie someone up with fuzzy handcuffs onstage and they get spanked," she said with a laugh. During the show, Van Lierop lets the crowd choose the tool -- leather-covered paddle or whip. On Friday night, they screamed along as Van Lierop went to town with the paddle.

Lords of Acid allow their sexual creativity to flow on stage, and this not only draws in the fans, it also makes them more comfortable with their own sexuality, according to Van Lierop. "Fans seem to be quite grateful for bringing sex into their lives. We bring out a lot of sexy, positive energy -- all in pure fun, of course," Van Lierop giggled.

And while the Lords have built and maintained a loyal fanbase over the last 10 years, their latest release, Our Little Secret (Antler Subway), has helped draw in new fans. Van Lierop said the album offers a balance of both rock and techno, thus attempting to create a bridge to electronic music that she feels America is lacking: "This tour has brought more of a rock audience to the show and the reactions have been good. I keep hearing that techno is growing [in America] but I think it's a lie. We listen to the radio and we don't hear anything. I know the fans are eager for something new." It's quite possible that the Lords are exactly what they wished for. (Lana Fanelli)
