To promote Cam'ron's upcoming LP, Sports, Drugs & Entertainment,Untertainment released an advertisement, which distorts the NationalBasketball Association's logo|, adding a gun to the silhouetted hand of former LALaker Jerry West. On April 19, a large billboard of this image was postedon Harlem's Malcolm X Boulevard. When members of the community mistakenlyassumed it was sponsored by the NBA, a number of activists, schoolofficials and church leaders complained, demanding action. The NBAresponded by filing suit against Untertainment on April 22, claiming aninfringement of their trademark. The league sought damages and an immediateinjunction against any further use of their logo, which required that thebillboard be taken down and an end to all print ads. Untertainment wasfurther pursued by calls from the offices of New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and the ReverendAl Sharpton. "For them to be coming after us like we're criminals is mindboggling," complained Untertainment Records president Jacob York, "Theydidn't need the injunction. Immediately after our lawyers told us that thead might be illegal, we pulled it and we apologized. We didn't know." Headded, "I guess the NBA is trying to send a message." As a result,Sports, Drugs & Entertainment has been pushed back from its Junerelease date to July 27. - Werner
