Grammy Preview: Weezer

1 NOMINATION * Best Rock Song

Fourteen years into a career built on geek-chic, Weezer churned out their biggest, dumbest, most rockin' tune to date in 2005. "Beverly Hills" earned the group its first-ever Grammy nom, and drummer Pat Wilson thinks Weezer have a good shot at upsetting the more established acts in their category, including U2 and Bruce Springsteen. Just don't expect him to thank God if his band wins.

Congratulations.

It's unbelievable!

You didn't see it coming?

No, not at all.

Why not? It's a killer song.

It certainly did very well. It's just crazy to think of us, after all this time, getting nominated for the Grammys.

Where were you when you heard about it?

I was at my house, in the kitchen. Making a latte. But it wasn't really a latte because I didn't foam the soy milk, so it was more like a mocha. My manager called and said, "Congratulations, you are nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Song." I said, "That's great!"

Do you think you'll win?

We might win. When I look at the people who we're up against, as far as the popularity of the songs, it seems like it's us and "Best of You," by Foo Fighters, but they're also up for Best Rock Album. If they win that, maybe we'll win Best Rock Song. That's our strategy now.

Who else do you want to win?

U2. I just think it's cool that they are so passionate about music after all this time. You don't often see people who are so into what they're doing after doing it for twenty-five years. I certainly hope that we would be the same way. And Jack Johnson should win. He's kind of like Surf Guy, that's why I'd vote for him. I'm an avid surfer.

If you win, who are you going to thank first?

I'll thank my family, you know, the typical bullshit. I'll probably try to get off the stage as fast as possible. People just wanna see you be grateful. I'll tell you who I won't thank -- I won't thank God. Because everybody else is gonna thank God, and I don't think God cares. We're a pretty godless band.
