From Metallica to Fiona
Metallica Sing SabbathMETALLICA will perform a set of BLACK SABBATH songs when they induct the heavy-metal pioneers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next Monday at the 21st annual ceremony taking place at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. (Sabbath themselves are not scheduled to perform.) Also being inducted this year are BLONDIE, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, SEX PISTOLS and the late jazz great MILES DAVIS.
Bloc Party, Streets Head Chicago Fest
The BLOC PARTY and the STREETS will headline the second annual Intonation Music Festival, set for June 24th and 25th at Chicago's Union Park. Tickets go on sale next Monday . . . In other festival news, the DRESDEN DOLLS, BLUES TRAVELER, UMPHREY'S McGEE, GUSTER and TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS are among the eclectic performers confirmed for the first-ever Green Apple Music Festival, April 20th through 23rd in more than thirty New York venues.
Springsteen Heads to N.O.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and the SEEGER SESSIONS BAND -- who play on the rocker's upcoming album of PETE SEEGER-associated folk songs, "We Shall Overcome: the Seeger Sessions" (due April 25th) -- will perform as part the April 30th bill of the 2006 New Orleans Jazz Festival. HERBIE HANCOCK, GOV'T MULE and ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND guitarist WARREN HAYNES, and legendary singer ETTA JAMES also join the fest's lineup, which already includes DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, BOB DYLAN, PAUL SIMON, JIMMY BUFFETT, KEITH URBAN, ANI DiFRANCO, LIONEL RICHIE, YOLANDA ADAMS and ROBERT RANDOLPH. Jazz Fest takes place between April 28th through 30th and May 5th through 7th in the heart of New Orleans.
Van Morrison Gets Nashville Key
VAN MORRISON was made an honorary citizen of Nashville Tuesday while in town for a show in support of this week's release, Pay the Devil. In honor of Morrison's first-ever in the country music capitol, Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell declared the concert date Van Morrison Day. Morrison begins his seventeen-date European trek next week in Nottingham, England. Pay the Devil features a dozen country songs covered by the Irish singer, in addition to three new originals.
Futureheads Unveil Future Plans
The FUTUREHEADS will release their sophomore album, News and Tributes, in the U.K. on May 22nd, but the album won't hit U.S. stores until late summer. The follow-up to the British indie rockers' 2004 self-titled debut will feature the single "Skip to the End." The band is currently playing limited engagements in England, with each show dedicated to an artist whose music influenced the making of their new record.
"Smile" Tops DVD Honors
BRIAN WILSON's Smile, a documentary following the former BEACH BOY through the making of the album of the same name, took home the annual Music DVD Awards' top honor on Tuesday. Other winners included: BARBRA STREISAND: The Television Specials, BOB DYLAN: No Direction Home, GREEN DAY: Bullet in a Bible and PAUL McCARTNEY in Red Square.
Animal Collective, NIN Man Ready Releases
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE will release the EP/DVD Grass on March 28th. The EP portion is the exclusive U.K. release for the "Grass" single off their recent, critically lauded album, Feels, while the DVD includes videos for "Grass," "Who Could Win a Rabbit?" and "Fickle Cycle" . . . Former NIN drummer JEROME DILLON will release Reminder, the debut album with his band NEARLY, on April 11th. The album features the TWILIGHT SINGERS' GREG DULLI (ex-AFGHAN WHIGS) and former NIN programmer KEITH HILLEBRANDT.
Simpson Helps Kids Smile
JESSICA SIMPSON will visit Washington, D.C., at the end of March to lobby Congress for funding Operation Smile, an organization that provides surgery to children with facial deformities. Simpson is currently on location in New Mexico filming the upcoming comedy Employee of the Month.
L.A. Cuts Stapp Some Slack
The Los Angeles City Attorney's office will not be filing charges against former CREED frontman SCOTT STAPP related to his February 11th arrest for public intoxication at Los Angeles International Airport. The incident occurred en route to the rocker's Hawaiian honeymoon, the day after he married former pageant queen Jacklyn Nesheiwat.
Fiona, Hot Hot Heat Head Back Out
With her supporting run on COLDPLAY's current tour recently wrapped, FIONA APPLE has begun rolling out dates for another headlining tour, with three shows announced thus far: May 6th in West Palm Beach, Florida, May 7th in Orlando, Florida, and May 9th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina . . . Canadian indie rockers HOT HOT HEAT will play two gigs, March 21st and 22nd, in their Vancouver hometown. The band has been busy since December, working on new material for the follow-up to last year's Elevator.
