From Nails to Nick
NIN, Beck Rock Sasquatch!NINE INCH NAILS, BECK, the FLAMING LIPS, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, the SHINS, BEN HARPER and MATISYAHU lead the bill for the fifth annual Sasquatch! Music Festival, set for Memorial Day Weekend (May 26th to 28th) at the Gorge Amphitheatre just outside Seattle. Others performing at the campout event include the DECEMBERISTS, SUFJAN STEVENS, GOMEZ, HIM, IRON AND WINE, NADA SURF, CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH!, ARCTIC MONKEYS, NEKO CASE, the TRAGICALLY HIP, WE ARE SCIENTISTS, WOLFMOTHER and AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD. Tickets go on sale March 4th through the House of Blues and Ticketmaster.
Bob Gets Back on the Road
In a move that will surprise few, BOB DYLAN and his band will get back on the road for a string of dates this spring. In addition to four announced solo shows beginning April 1st in Reno, Nevada, the music icon will be joined by MERLE HAGGARD and the STRANGERS for three additional stops: April 7th in Las Vegas, April 8th in Sun City, Arizona, and April 10th in Tucson, Arizona. More dates are expected to follow.
Glitter Trial Date Set
GARY GLITTER's trial will begin on March 2nd in the Vietnamese province of Ba Ria Vung Tau for charges of committing obscene acts with two underaged girls. The trial, expected to last two days, will be closed to the public to protect the identities of the minors involved. The British Seventies glam rocker, born Paul Francis Gadd, has been in Vietnamese custody since November 19th, when he was apprehended in Ho Chi Minh City attempting to leave the country. Glitter, 61, denies the charges, claiming he was helping them with their English. He faces between three and seven years in prison if convicted. In 1999, Glitter served a two-month jail sentence in England for possessing child pornography.
Willie Plays for Injured Troops
WILLIE NELSON performed for U.S. troops injured in Iraq on Friday, at the Brooke Army Medical Center near San Antonio, Texas. The twenty-two-song set included the favorites "Whiskey River," "On the Road Again" and "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." This marks the second time Nelson has performed at the center . . . In other charity performance news, CELINE DION and ELTON JOHN performed together for the first time ever last Monday at Las Vegas' Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where both have had residencies. The show raised money for Harrah's Entertainment Inc. workers affected by last year's hurricanes.
Rolling Stones Rock Rio
The ROLLING STONES performed for more than one million people at the band's free concert on Rio de Janiero's Copacabana Beach Saturday night, with more than 10,000 police providing security. It was the rock icons' first concert in the city since 1998, and the nearly two-and-a-half hour performance featured such classics as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Brown Sugar" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Frontman MICK JAGGER, whose son Lucas (with model LUCIANA MORAD) is half-Brazilian, spoke to the crowd in Portuguese. A film of the show, a stop on the band's A Bigger Bang tour, will hit more than 150 theaters in the U.S. on February 28th.
Bee Gees Reunite in Miami
BARRY and ROBIN GIBB, two of the three BEE GEES, reunited onstage at Miami's Diplomat Hotel for a charity concert on Saturday night. It was their first performance since the death of their brother MAURICE, who died in 2003 after surgery for an intestinal blockage. The Gibb brothers sang songs spanning thirty-five years, including the Seventies hits "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Stayin' Alive," as well as a tribute to Maurice, "Don't Forget to Remember." Profits from the event, the thirty-second annual Love and Hope Ball, benefit the Diabetes Research Institute.
Suge Knight Files
Rap mogul MARION "SUGE" KNIGHT has filed a $106 million federal lawsuit against Michael Harris, an incarcerated drug dealer who claims he gave over $1.5 million in seed money to help launch Knight's Death Row Records in 1991. Harris has already settled a 1996 case against Interscope that included Knight and Death Row Records, which may protect Knight from a new suit by the dealer, currently serving drug and attempted murder sentences at San Quentin State Prison.
Ray's Bus to Roll Again
RAY CHARLES' tour bus was donated to Atlanta's Morehouse College, where the late piano legend received an honorary degree in 2001. A gift from the Ray Charles Foundation, the thirty-five-seat, dark blue bus will be displayed on campus along with other Charles memorabilia, and may be used for student trips in the future.
Jacket, Anastasio Lead More Fests
MY MORNING JACKET and BEN FOLDS will headline Vanderbilt University's Rites of Spring Music Festival in Nashville, on April 21st and April 22nd. GOV'T MULE, CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH!, BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY and BLUE MERLE are also confirmed for the on-campus festival. Tickets go on sale March 1st through Ticketmaster . . . TREY ANASTASIO, O.A.R., the STRING CHEESE INCIDENT, UMPHREY'S McGEE and MEDESKI, MARTIN AND WOOD are among the jam-rockers leading the initial lineup of the fourth annual 10,000 Lakes Festival. Tickets for the camping and music event, July 19th through 22nd in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, are currently on sale through 10KLF.com . . . The 2006 edition of the New Orleans-based Ponderosa Stomp will relocate to Memphis. Sixty artists that include ARCHIE BELL, SLEEPY LaBEEF and SONNY BURGESS are slated to perform across three stages at the fifth annual festival, between May 8th and 10th. Proceeds from the event will go toward the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and MusiCares, benefiting those displaced by 2005's hurricanes in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast.
Lachey Seeks Spousal Support
NICK LACHEY filed court papers seeking spousal support from his estranged wife, JESSICA SIMPSON, on Friday. Simpson, who filed for divorce on December 19th, has asked the court to deny Lachey. Lachey, 32, who rose to fame in the boy band 98 DEGREES and returned to the spotlight alongside his wife in MTV's popular Newlyweds series, is also asking the court to declare his post-separation earnings separate property. Lachey's filings list the couple's official date of separation as December 13th, while Simpson's name November 23nd.
