From Kanye to Fall Out Boy
Kanye Accepts New "Mission"KANYE WEST, currently nominated for eight Grammys, will produce a new version of the classic Mission: Impossible theme song for this summer's latest installment of the action series, Mission: Impossible III. U2 drummer LARRY MULLEN JR. and bassist ADAM CLAYTON recorded the theme song for the first of actor TOM CRUISE's Mission Impossible movies in 1996, while LIMP BIZKIT took on the theme for the 2000 sequel. M: I-3, starring Cruise, PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, KERI RUSSSELL and BILLY CRUDUP, opens May 5th.
Doherty Gets Community Service
British rocker PETE DOHERTY was given a twelve-month community service order, including another stint in drug rehab, after pleading guilty to several drug possession charges Wednesday. The BABYSHAMBLES frontman was refused bail and incarcerated January 27th after pleading guilty for heroin possession for the second time that week. In addition to rehab, Doherty will be required to submit to a monthly drug test. The singer is due back in court for a review on March 8th.
Great White Man Takes Blame
Daniel Biechele, the former tour manager for GREAT WHITE, pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter at Tuesday's hearing in Providence, Rhode Island, thus avoiding a trial. Biechele, 29, is blamed for setting off the pyrotechnics display that killed 100 people and injured more than 200 others present at the 2003 gig at the Station nightclub, where the band was performing that evening. He will be sentenced on May 8th.
Les Paul Misses Tribute
Guitar innovator LES PAUL is in good condition and recovering at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, after X-rays found fluid in his lungs last week. Paul, who entered the facility February 3rd, was forced to miss his honorary ninetieth birthday concert -- featuring VELVET REVOLVER's SLASH and AEROSMITH guitarist JOE PERRY -- Tuesday night in Los Angeles. In a recent statement Paul assured, "The worst is over. I am doing better. I am grateful to all of my friends for their thoughts, and I will be back shortly making them laugh." Despite health problems, Paul plans on playing his usual residency at New York's Iridium jazz club next Monday.
Sabbath Bring the Hits
The day after their March 13th induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, BLACK SABBATH will release Greatest Hits 1970-1978, a sixteen-track collection of selected studio recordings from the heavy metal act's early years featuring the metal monster's original line-up -- OZZY OSBOURNE, TONY IOMMI, TERRY "GEEZER" BUTLER and BILL WARD. Classic Sabbath cuts on the CD include "War Pigs," The Wizard," "Paranoid" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath."
Cream to Serve More Brew
While DAVID GILMOUR declared PINK FLOYD officially "over" to an Italian newspaper this week, fellow classic rockers CREAM may play more shows together. In an interview with Reuters, bassist JACK BRUCE said the band, which has played seven shows since reuniting in 2005, will schedule more dates in the future. The legendary rock trio will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys on Wednesday night.
Hawthorne Heights Launch Network
Emo rockers HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS, in association with Victory Records, launched the MySpace-like Web site Thisiswhoweare.org this week. Beginning February 14th, members of the online community can enter the "Saying Sorry" contest for a chance to win a personal apology from the band during a show on the upcoming Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour (also featuring ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS and FALL OUT BOY). Free tickets and backstage passes will also go to the winner. The band's sophomore effort, If Only You Were Lonely, is due February 28th.
Marley's Home Honored
The Jamaican government has designated BOB MARLEY's Kingston, Jamaica, home a national heritage site. Referred to as the Bob Marley Museum, the site is also home to the Tuff Gong International recording studio and already serves as a major tourist attraction. Marley, who died in 1981 from cancer, would have turned sixty-one on February 6th.
Hoobastank New Record
Southern California four-piece HOOBASTANK will release their third studio album, Every Man for Himself, on April 18th. "If I Were You," the first single, is currently available for a listen at the band's Web site, hoobastank.com, and hits radio this week.
From Folds to Funeral
Piano man BEN FOLDS has announced eight U.S. tour dates (with more in the works), beginning March 4th in Seattle . . . U.K. family act the MAGIC NUMBERS return to the U.S. this spring for twelve performances, including a stop at the Coachella Valley Music Festival an April 30th. Joining the indie-pop darlings for most of the club tour, which kicks of March 15th in Fort Worth, Texas, will be the ELECTED, the side project of RILO KILEY man BLAKE SENNETT . . . BUILT TO SPILL will embark on a thirty-seven-date tour coinciding with the release You in Reverse, their first offering in five years. The spring trek begins April 11th, the date of Reverse's release, in Minneapolis . . . FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND have postponed three U.K. shows, beginning February 8th, due to singer MATT DAVIES' laryngitis. The emo rockers still plan to join the Taste of Chaos Tour, beginning February 16th in San Diego.
Rockers Hit the Screen
FALL OUT BOY will perform on the February 15th episode of the WB's One Tree Hill, dubbed "Just Watch the Fireworks." The emo rockers, who contributed a track for the storyline-inspired soundtrack, One Tree Hill: Friends With Benefit, play at a breast cancer benefit concert for the character Peyton (HILARIE BURTON) . . . After the success of last year's Rock Star: INXS, which resurrected the Eighties rock band with winner J.D. FORTUNE at the helm, Rock Star: The Series will return for the second season this summer. In March, CBS will hold auditions for the next installment of the show in cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. No announcement has been made about the band involved in the project . . . MANDY MOORE will play a working-class girl whose life changes after a hit-and-run accident in Twist of Fate, to be produced by MATT DAMON.
