J.Lo, Roger Waters, Chris Brown and More
J.Lo, Travolta Head to "Dallas"JENNIFER LOPEZ will star alongside actor JOHN TRAVOLTA in the movie adaptation of the wildly popular, over-the-top Eighties drama, Dallas. Directed by GURINDER CHADHA (Bend It Like Beckham), the flick is tentatively scheduled to start shooting this October, with plans to hit theaters in late 2007. Lopez will play Sue Ellen, while Travolta will play J.R. Ewing. Both LINDSAY LOHAN and JESSICA SIMPSON are reportedly vying for the role of series sexpot Lucy Ewing Cooper, made famous by actress CHARLENE TILTON.
Floyd's Waters to Play U.S.
Former PINK FLOYD frontman ROGER WATERS has rolled out five fall U.S. solo dates, starting with a September 9th gig in Mansfield, Massachusetts and wrapping October 5th in L.A. The large gap suggests a full-fledged North American run is in the works. Waters will reportedly perform the epic Floyd album, The Dark Side of the Moon, in its entirety for the second half of these shows. In addition, the pioneering rocker will tour internationally this summer.
Chris Brown's Dimples and Music Heading to DVD
Shrieking tweens everywhere can relax: CHRIS BROWN's Journey, a DVD/CD package of music videos and bonus audio material from the baby-faced R&B singer, will hit stores May 30th. The DVD features music videos for "Gimmie That (Remix)" with LIL WAYNE and "Run It!" -- Brown's first single, with JUELZ SANTANA. A half-hour documentary chronicling Brown's speedy rise to heartthrob-dom, featuring rehearsal and international tour footage, is also included in the set. Brown, whose 2005 self-titled debut has sold more than a million copies, wraps his spring run April 27th in Atlanta.
Mick Jagger Gets Robbed on Primetime
MICK JAGGER is reportedly in talks with ABC about appearing in a comedy pilot based on a crew of working-class New York guys who decide to rob him. The ROLLING STONES frontman, whose 2005 A Bigger Bang tour grossed $162 million, would only show up in a few scenes throughout the series. In May, the Stones kick off a three-month European trek in continuous support of 2005's A Bigger Bang, on May 27th in Barcelona, Spain.
Smashing Pumpkins Make It Official, Sort of
The SMASHING PUMPKINS have "officially" announced that they are at work on the follow-up to 2002's Machina/The Machines of God, via their Web site, smashingpumpkins.com. The post is pretty stark, so here it is: It's official, the Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 2000. No release date has yet been set, but the band plans to begin recording this summer. No real information yet, however, on exactly who "the band" is these days. We attest the hype would be way more killer if original guitarist JAMES IHA and bassist D'ARCY WRETZKY were in on the fun.
Frampton, Gordon Feelin' Music High
At Thursday night's sixth annual Jammys -- the jam band scene's mash-up event held at New York's Theater at Madison Square Garden -- guitarist PETER FRAMPTON proved that even after thirty some years he is still a Jedi voice-box master, during a performance of his "Do You Feel Like We Do" with college radio favorites GUSTER. Other collaborations at the event included JOE SATRIANI with former JANE'S ADDICTION drummer STEPHEN PERKINS; BETTYE LaVETTE with BLUES TRAVELER and GRATEFUL DEAD drummers MICKEY HART; and BILL KRUETZMAN with ex-PHISH bassist MIKE GORDON. Gordon also accepted two awards that night: Studio of the Year for Sixty Six Steps, his collaboration with folk singer LEO KOTTKE; and Archival Album of the Year, for the Phish reissue, Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995. Other winners included BOB DYLAN (DVD of the Year No Direction Home), MOE. (Live Performance of the Year, February 10th, 2005 at NYC's Roseland Ballroom) and WIDESPREAD PANIC (Vonage Live Album of the Year, Live at Myrtyle Beach). FRANK ZAPPA was honored with the evenings' Lifetime Achievement Award. The Jammys kick off the inaugural Green Apple Music Festival, running through Sunday at more than thirty New York City venues.
David Lee Roth Gets Canned
Former VAN HALEN frontman DAVID LEE ROTH was fired from his short-lived, high-profile gig as a CBS morning radio host this week. Within a few weeks, Roth will be replaced by XM Satellite Radio hosts OPIE AND ANTHONY. The popular duo will replace the former rocker on all seven stations Roth took over when shock jock HOWARD STERN leapt to Sirius Satellite Radio in January: WFNY New York, WYSP Philadelphia, WBCN Boston, KLLI Dallas, WNCX Cleveland, WPBZ West Palm Beach and WRKZ Pittsburgh. The Opie and Anthony show will simulcast in an uncensored version on XM. Though much-hyped as a solid solution to Stern's departure, Roth's radio show has been widely panned.
Bob Dylan Gets Thematic For Radio Show
BOB DYLAN will finally broadcast the first installment of his XM Satellite Radio show "Theme Time Radio Hour With Your Host Bob Dylan," on May 3rd. Perhaps inspired by his own tracklist ("Buckets of Rain," "Blowin' In the Wind") the first theme of the series will be "weather," featuring tunes like Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary," Frank Sinatra's "Summer Wind" and more obscure tracks from Dean Martin and Irma Thomas. Future "Radio Hour" topics reportedly include "dance," "police," "cars" and "whiskey."
Swift to Mourn Proof in Jail
Sparing little compassion during dire times in Detroit's rap community, a Michigan District Court judge sentenced D12 member SWIFT (Ondre Moore) to ninety-three days behind bars after the rapper tested positive for alcohol during his Thursday booking on a bench warrant. Wednesday the warrant was issued after the rapper missed a court date to appear instead as a pallbearer at the funeral of fellow D12 member PROOF, who was killed in an April 11th shootout in Detroit.
