Palin Resigns. But Why?!

7/3/09, 3:55 pm EST

WTF?

Sarah Palin has pulled the plug on her governorship. Before the end of her only term. At an impromptu press conference. At her house. On a Friday. Before the 4th of July. And refuses to answer questions.

This is not in keeping with a woman with presidential ambitions.

And certainly not in keeping with a politician who has learned to milk a media frenzy for every last drop (see Letterman, David.)

No. This has the hallmarks of a politician slinking away before the shit hits the fan.

Really. If this were some double-bank-shot designed to bolster her presidential standing (as AP seems to suggest) would Sarah Palin choose to duck out on the first day of a three-day weekend? When the entire American mediaplex is off buying ice for the cooler?

No way.

Another shoe is about to drop, but what is it?

UPDATE: Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC reporting Palin sources saying ex Guv is “out of politics for good.”

UPDATE II: If you’re looking for the most plausible unsubstantiated scandalicious rumor about Palin’s sudden exit, Bradblog is your buddy.

Sarah Palin | 7/3/2009, 4:05 pm EST

She is worse than G.W. Bush.

She doesn’t wish me well. As a gay rights activist & animal rights activist.

cyn curnan | 7/3/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Palin resigning before the end of her first term as governor of a sparsely populated state should ruin her prospects of ever making it to the White House.
One can only hope.

The Pig in Zen | 7/3/2009, 4:37 pm EST

So either this is:

a) Palin taking time off to focus on her family and Presidential run, which by quitting before completing her only term pretty much shoots her Presidential ambitions in the foot, thus wasting 3 1/2 years of her life for a nomination she most likely won’t get.

b) Tim’s shoe theory.

Either way, this is clearly schadenfreude for liberals. And I’m a liberal.

Katy | 7/3/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Yea!!! This is good news any way you cut it.

Tim Singleton | 7/3/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Amazing. Bill Clinton, a married man, gets a blow job from one of his young 20 year old interns and get fullcourt interference from the press.

This woman resigns…and the entire press corp is standing on red alert to be sure to get their piece of the carcass.

One thing is for sure, if the people of this country do not deserve the government we have NOW, which is nothing but a continuation of the last 20 years, the press surely does. Cannot wait to see them wring their hands when all THEIR chickens come home to roost. It you have trouble understanding why that is relevant to this story, so what?

melindabnyc | 7/3/2009, 4:53 pm EST

something is most definitely up on this….

Tyrone | 7/3/2009, 4:59 pm EST

Actually, Palin is going to run for President. With less then five months left in this year, Palin would have had to had a decesion whether she was running for re election or not. Palin wouldn’t have started SarahPAC just for the hell of it. By her resigning and focusing behind the curtains on a 2012 run, she will no longer be in the public’s eye to be attacked as a political figure. Palin will also be available to heighten her viability helping GOP candidates with fundraiser appearances during the midterms next year. That is something she wouldn’t have been able to do as a governor running for reelection.

AZ_youKnowWho | 7/3/2009, 5:06 pm EST

So obvious….Golman Sachs has something on Palin and ordered her to step down to divert attention from Taibbi’s article which was gaining a lot of attention…..somebody at RS pass this on to Taibbi to investigate….quick!

Geez. Listening to her talk is like listening to either:

1. A First-grade teacher/team mom.

2. Fingernails on a blackboard.

3. A drunk grandma

Hooray Hooray, now go away.

Xynnek | 7/3/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Bash her at your peril. She is more popular than anyone knows. She is going to get into the fight to save America from Obama’s treasonous presidency. She will fight to restore American greatness and exceptionalism and American free enterprise, and to stand up to Marxist and Islamist dictators.

Greg_D | 7/3/2009, 5:25 pm EST

When she ran for vice-president, the people of Alaska demanded that as Governor that she should be in Alaska running Alaska. Her poll numbers quickly dropped.

Meanwhile Obama started to run for the federal senate office as soon as he won a spot on the state senate and ran for president as soon as he won the election as federal senator. He only showed up half the time for both senator and the people of Illinois and the press didn’t care.

That’s the difference between a Red State and a Blue state. The people in the Red state are happy when their politicans are working and in the blue states the people are happy when their politicans aren’t working.

Her term is up is at the start of 2010 so she’ll have ended her term 4 month’s shy which would probably be a lame duck period for her anyways. It’s not like Alaska has a crises. They have a major budget surplus of something like $5-$8 billion and their unemployment is just 2.5% higher than their all time low (and it will be lower when winter sets in and the part timers flock to another state).

She did talk to the press and she’ll probably probably make a formal announcement when she gets her team together and plans things out. It’s a little early to be running for office, especially when she doesn’t have a team to help her.

bobbymiami | 7/3/2009, 5:30 pm EST

I agree, xynnek. She has the common sense, leadership and support to undo Obama’s dismantling of American greatness. His tax and spend redistribution agenda will ruin this country.

susss | 7/3/2009, 5:39 pm EST

dems are terrified of her magnetism.

yo | 7/3/2009, 5:44 pm EST

are you folks serious? think palin could do a good job running the country? she can’t even effectively run her own home…

vdb | 7/3/2009, 5:53 pm EST

the wink slinks.
the tundra is melting.
the bodies are floating to the surface.

Johnathan | 7/3/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Palin needs to concentrate on her disfunctional family and special education children….as gov, she has NO time to be a Mom and take care of the kids…she is doing the right thing..

Michael | 7/3/2009, 5:58 pm EST

I think the Vanity Fair article sunk her.

I cannot believe there are actually people who still think she could be President. She doesn’t even know basic American History, World History, or Geography, and she is uninterested in science. She would rather speak in tongues.

evansined | 7/3/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Xynnek and Boobymiami

You are kidding right? FIrst, I don’t bash her I really don’t. I have actually come to pity her. But you have inspired me to comment. Second, given bobbymiami’s total misrepresentation and myopic interpretation of Obama’s policies (which are frightening) I am lead to believe you are either wealthy and callous to the reality of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer regime under bush, and the sad state of not-so- American greatness we were/are in as a result of the that debacle…. or if you aren’t wealthy it is even more frightening, that you would fight against your own best interests for whatever personal reason that may be that blinds you to understanding what is in your best interest. This country didn’t come to greatness way back when on the backs of oil tycoons and the wealthy, they came to it on the backs of the working class…many of those wealthy people only got rich as a result of the working class. Closed mindedness has cost us greatness, and international respect…too much american/bush propaganda. He was the fascist! Important point on your lamenting of lost AMerican greatness….You can’t be great and a leader if no one respects you and/or isn’t willing to follow you – just basic logic. Power – as in military power isn’t what makes a country great, it may make a country powerful but not great?! No one exactly loved when the English owned half the world and did not respect the people in that world…..remember? military power and fist waving, crushing other governments, is not what made this country great… and it sure isn’t what makes a country great now….small example of where we have lost important focus -we are about 35th or 38th in education in the world! You can’t stay “great” that way! There is much more to what makes a country great, not saying not to defend ourselves, that is another misrepresentation that republicans put out there – yes, defending ourselves can be a necessity, but that is nonsense to think we are fighting a war on terrorism by being in the middle east…it’s foolish. Seriously, get out a little, step into a world view?!

Also please define popular? there is good and bad popular and I’m not thinking she is exactly on the well respected list. She is a national icon for stupidity….sadly. I hate that. I do believe the republican party threw her under the bus so to speak, because they are about winning at any cost, to any one. and that was wrong. and it bothers me that the icon she has become is a sad representation for women, even though unintended on her part..but popular? your dreaming! I have family in Alaska and they are republican! and they really really don’t like her…she is not very popular in her own state!! honestly. and what does popular have to do with intelligent, skilled, diplomatic, and having a strong character? Popular isn’t always the best way to pick leaders, remember high school?
You are living in a old-time movie if you think all we need to worry about is standing up to an imaginary “marxist” and islamic leaders?? I think you need to read Marx, for real….do you really think that addressing the needs of the middle class, making sure everyone in this “wealthy” country has health care is marxist? it is humane, a concept you must not understand….but you won’t read this all the way through and if you do you won’t think about it and process it, your closed mind will dismiss it, and continue to espouse what you already have, you were just waiting for another turn to say it.

Stupidity is what is really killing our greatness – like people believing the stuff you espouse, sorry. but I had to respond, people like you make me fear for my children and grandchildren.

bevinpa | 7/3/2009, 6:28 pm EST

magnetism? Do you have a television? Have you read anything? It is hilarious that you think the democrats are afraid of her magnetism or anything else about her…Try a reality check.

Andrea | 7/3/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Maybe she’s just sick and tired of being maligned by the media and people on blogs that have nothing better to do than make fun of other people … and no, I am not a Republican, I do not agree with her views, I did not nor will I vote for her for VP or President, but last time I looked, this is still America and she has a right to her opinions as do all of us … leave her alone already!

Andrea | 7/3/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Coach | 7/3/2009, 7:08 pm EST

Greg, your math is way off. She’s served 2.5 years as governor, and is stepping down at the end of this month, leaving her more than a YEAR away from a full term, not 4 months, as you spin…..

Her political career, as an elected official, is, essentially, over.

She can’t speak. Doesn’t know much about much. And, her condescending, pretentious attitude toward the ‘lower 48′, combined with the ‘family values’ hypocricy, is NOT something I’m going to miss.

Ardent'sFool | 7/3/2009, 7:13 pm EST

The USA would be the laughing stock of the world if we elected Palin; who is far less qualified than GWB, and he was a Yale Cheerleader.

Greg_D | 7/3/2009, 7:36 pm EST

The artical I was reading had her become governor in 2006 and ending in 2010. Like the writer of that artical, I never bothered looking up the actual dates.

Wiki has her approval rating at 54% now and it’s been dropping since Nov. 4, 2007.

Obama couldn’t even get his own religion right and that was the toughest question he had from the press while running. He also didn’t know how many states were in the U.S. Biden, the actual VP imagines sniper fire just like Obama’s secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Obama’s Chief of Staff is known for stabbing his cooked meat saying “Die die die.” Compared to these people, Palin is very smart.

This country needs to wake up to the extreme take-over of our country and she will help lead the way out of complacency, we are in for a fight to keep our liberty and freedom. She cost McCain the election, her folkyness, accent and winking do not ring true, her intellect is below par (our vivid memory of the last one who delegates and follows because of their lack of intellect), but lets face it with the right type of marketing (vote folky, vote god) it can be sold to US, history tends to repeat itself. God help us!

joely | 7/4/2009, 2:32 am EST

After listening to as much of her insipid speech as I could stand, I’m left with the impression that her minders are taking her offline to make another attempt at getting her to pass the Turing Test.

Jorge Bailey | 7/4/2009, 4:11 am EST

Sarah Palin resigning as govenor of Alaska just shows me she lacks toughness to secure her commitment…Difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom lipstick she says wya back at the RNC convention…. I truly believe Sarah Palin should be feared only because I believe she would love to be the fuel for the fire where she wants to cause national chaos – I truly believe that she and her husband want Alaska to succeed from the union and want to see other states like Texas (since she is chummy with Rick Perry) succeed as well – Watch Out for Sarah and some sort of cult creation with a follwing of people who would love to overthrow the gov’t and try to whip up the population into a frenzy…..

Jorge Bailey | 7/4/2009, 4:28 am EST

If McCain had won the election Sarah would be a further extention of Dick Cheney (in a dress of course) – She would be using all the power afforded to the position of VP via the constitution (according to her) – Lets get real OK – Sarah would be under the same amount of scrutiny if not more so if she and McCain were in charge and if things got too heated while on office then who was to say that she would or would not have stepped down like she has as the AK governor – Bottom Line is Sarah was not ready for the big stage then and she is not ready now – She needs a lot of time to bone up on basic civics and international affairs as well as adding value and substance when speaking with regard to the position in which she is trying to attain – IMO I do not believe Sarah could handle the pressure nor the exposure on a national level – No Disrespect to AK but we are talking about an area which is detached from the mainland and that has more wild life than human life – She just don’t have major league talent -

Jorge Bailey | 7/4/2009, 4:45 am EST

I am sure that Sarah Palin will give an exclusive interview with Sean Hannity (LOL) – I am sure Sean will ask her all the real tough questions like he always does when interviewing his GOP buddies (LOL!!! LMFAO….) –

Watch out for some crazy movement drummed up by the likes of Palin, Hannity, Limbaugh, and hell even Joe the Plumber to just create chaos….

Happy Birhtday USA !!!! Best present the country gets is that Palin is more than likely done politically……….

Jorge Bailey | 7/4/2009, 4:53 am EST

Maybe she is resigning becasue there could be a sex-scandal brewing that will rear its ugly head – Perhaps she was having an affair with some Russian News Reporter and they were taking turns skating across the frozen pond which separated their houses -

Uno Dos Tres Infidelities?????

Miz | 7/4/2009, 7:55 am EST

Maybe she’s stepping back so hubby, Todd, can go back & lead the Alaska Independence Party and Alaska to liberty.

George Bush | 7/4/2009, 10:11 am EST

Palin has crumbled. Palin…the hypocrite, the liar, the moron, the political loser, the embarrassment and now the quitter. If the GOP brings her back as a running woman….they are more lost than I every would’ve thought. Palin…your failbloat has arrived.

cyndi - washington | 7/4/2009, 10:47 am EST

So, most of you on here prefer typical lying politicians? I think she’s just what this country needs. A real person who knows how to get things done. Can any of you naysayers site the many accomplishments she’s achieved up in Alaska or are you too focused on her disabled son? Why don’t you start actually listening to Obama and the difference between what he says and what he’s doing. Wake up. Final note – yeah, your current vice president is a real whiz…

cyndi - washington | 7/4/2009, 10:54 am EST

It makes sense. Thousands of hours have been spent defending frivolous, unfounded, ethics complaints – that’s not the job she signed up for. It’s a waste of hers and Alaskan citizens time. She wants to write and promote a book which will IMMEDIATELY be a bestseller (mark my words) – can’t do that as a sitting gov. She will make bank on that. She needs to get down to the “lower 48″ and build a support base. She is a POWERHOUSE fundraiser for the GOP. She will have the chance to better prepare with her own campaign – as opposed to the pathetically mismanaged nightmare of McCain’s crew. She’s a long shot but I sure wouldn’t bet against her. By the way, Ronald Reagan was ridiculed and maligned by the press as well. She is exactly what this country needs for those of us who are sick and tired of the politics as usual, elitist career politician crowd that’s supposed to be representing the will of the people. Most of you Obama supporters got sold a bill of goods.

Smart Guy | 7/4/2009, 11:07 am EST

U People R Just JAILus!

Sarah Palin is about to BLOW UP!

Yes, that’s right folks! We have just learned through “IS” Insider Sources, that the Prez2B is about to put her camPAIN on STEROIDs!!!! Exclamation Mark. Clap. Applause and drum rolls… puhSLeeez. “IS” has just informed us that the vivacious EX-gov is putting her Prez hopes on HGH! Her Governors Humpty!

Yep! As we type, her “IC” Inner Circle team of “BS” Beaucratic Shakers are convening in D.C. to set the stage for the next Prez race. We went inside Studio B, The Situation Room and did a 360 and spoke with Hannity, O’Reilly, Blitzer, Donner and Prancer and it’s confirmed, her P-TEAM is on the move! P-TEAM Political Tactical Experts At Mucking are feverishly working behind the scenes prepping the shapely political virtuoso for the announcement. Word is the ticket could be:

Palin and LIMPbaugh
Palin and Newt GingRich
Palin and Sanford
Palin and SPITzer
Palin and Hannity
Palin and O’Reilly
Palin and Ensign

Although the P-TEAM is still fiercely debating whose going to be Sarah’s running mate, LIMPbaugh says he’s the best candidate for America. When GingRich asked if his past could affect the ticket, his response was, “NO!” Newt said America has forgiven and forgotten that he called it quits just like Palin. If you are a TRUE Republican, you should be Xcited!!!! Go Republicans! Go GOP Get Others Pumped! We can do this!

BurnDaddy | 7/4/2009, 11:20 am EST

Well said, evansined. Thanks

Coach | 7/4/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Greg, Obama was referring to the amount of primaries. But, as usual, you spin it. If you honestly believe that Obama doesn’t know how many states there are…….well, nevermind.

She’s a joke. Always will be. 24/7 news cycles have exposed her as a fraud, not only to the ‘lower 48′, but also to a growing contingent of Alaskans. For me, if she runs for president, I couldn’t be happier. Nobody in their right, pragmatic mind, would vote for her.

Anonymous | 7/4/2009, 1:08 pm EST

Jed Clampett

1. no one runs for vice president, they are appointed by virtue of the popularity of the president they are parasited onto.

2. the president doesn’t really choose the vp, he is saddled with the partner by higher forces. Remember when Reagan used to say there was no way he would have Bush Sr. as VP. Yet had to bring him on board and was then almost murdered a few months into office?

3. Palin isn’t worthy of the governmorship of Alaska, much less the VP seat or God forbid, the presidency. She is obviously a convenient tool that is easily manipulated by greedy ’special interests’.

4. The people that brought you Ted Stevens and a justice team that completely botched a simple investigation in such a way as to allow the man a way out is insidious, knows no flag or religion and is intent on world domination at any cost to satisfy their greedy endeavors. They are the same one’s trying to install Palin as they tried to do with the failed hero turned corpirate.

I voted for Obama. I got caught up in the “change” hysteria. I made a mistake. This guy is nothing but bad news for American prosperity and opportunity. His massive govt programs will ruin this country. We will all become California. Think Sarah has freed herself to begin the fight. I will support her. She at least will look out for America first, not bash America first.

cardiochase | 7/4/2009, 2:32 pm EST

Sarah is great. The fight has just begun. Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod are shaking. This woman draws crowds … big crowds. period. Her thinking is sound. She has common sense, a moral compass and a very definite understanding of good and evil.

Average Joe | 7/4/2009, 3:50 pm EST

So did she give the blazer back that she said she was going to donate? Probably not! Just another hypocrite, I am sure. This made my day, to hear that she is a quitter!
I read one of the other comments, that was bashing Obama about his tax and spend. But we are at a 26 year high of unemployment. Reagan was in office then. That is not in the news. The GOP needs to go away with Palin. They are all Hypocrites, who use fear to get what they want. If it was not for the Church, Palin would not have been elected. She won a beauty contest, was a big part of the Church, and then used to Church for support to get elected. This is why it is important to have Seperation of Church and State. That is OUR constitution!!

Coach Obama said he had been to 56 or 57 states. That is not spin its fact, well not facts that MSNoBama would show but factual none the less.

Why don’t you just keep trying to safe from the next ice age rather than playing spin control for Obama?

DirtyDennis | 7/4/2009, 7:51 pm EST

You can, of course, support your ridiculous claim with something that resembles facts; like a quote? Maybe?

But it doesn’t matter, if Mr. Obama says we have 56 states, then get used to it, WE HAVE 56 STATES!!

FactsVSfiction | 7/4/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Having read much net speculation today that this could also be about a 13 million dollar sports complex contract she granted with a possible link to her 1.5 million dollar home on a substantially smaller salary, I think that comfortable babbling analysts running her for president prematurely should instead do some actual journalistic digging. Just a thought.

Jorge Bailey | 7/4/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Hey Dirty Dennis –

Lighten Up Dude – First and Foremost Obamma did not say we have 56 states – He said we have been to 57 states (this was while he was campaigning) – Now lets give Obamma the benefit of the doubt and be reasonably open minded – He probably was campaigning in all 50 states and re-visited some states multiple times which would account fo rthe more than 50 number -

Now Dirty Dennis Do you really think that President Obamma does not know that we have 50 states – He has a degree in constitutional law if I am not mistaken – The man is not stupid – He has more knowledge in his pinky toe than Palin and W combined –

Palin has a bachelors degree out of Idaho I believe and I believe her major was communications –

Do you think Obamma is smarter than Palin or do you think that Palin is smarter than Obamma?

Fair question????

Obameter | 7/4/2009, 10:42 pm EST

reasonmclucus | 7/5/2009, 2:34 am EST

Perhaps she has developed the attitude expressed in the old Johnny Paycheck classic – Take This Job and Shove It. Perhaps someone has told her that FDR is the only losing VP candidate who ever was elected president and, like other recent major party candidates, she ain’t no FDR.

Delta Wild Man | 7/5/2009, 9:05 am EST

Sarah needs her shot at being president.
Come on, We need a WOMAN president.
We’ve had white men, black men, fathers, sons, uncles and nephews.
Hillary wont work,, she’s a democrat, and from the looks of past WOMAN democrats,, Nancy Pelosi, Cynthia McKinny,, I just don’t see a very good running record.
Name One Democrat WOMAN, Black, White, Green or Pink who has done anything that’s worth talking about.
I look at Those Democrat Woman sort of like that Gay Miss America Judge looked at Ms California,, ” BABES are to be seen and not Heard “.
Can anyone tell me that then senator Obama didn’t have to tell House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to ” Shut The FU** UP!! ” at least 12 times when he was running for the White House, then he finally gave up and shipped her and Reid off to some undisclosed location and duck taped their mouths shut.

Palin can’t be any worse that Pelosi or Clinton.
Oh,, and Palin has,, at the very least,, Balanced a Check Book for a State.
Unlike a certain President I can Recall.

But Sarah Palin’s political futures all boil down to this.
Is President Obama Skrewing the Pooch with his form of Obamanomics?
Will Un-employment start to level off and start going down?
Will President Obama have to break campaign promises and Raise Taxes on the Middle Class ” VOTING CLASS “?

Because If President Obama and the Democrat Controlled Congress is perceived at being CARTER, THE SEQUIL and his band of Marry Idiots, who knows what could happen??
The voter’s may decide to elect a washed up old actor and his monkey to the White House and take the congress away from the seasoned blue blooded professional politicians and hand it over to a bunch of Southern Baptist Bible Thumpers…….

But the Balls in the Democrat’s Court and from what some of the extreme left wing members of the Democrat Party are saying,, Obama already has one strike against him and is about to swing at another wild pitch!!! Good Lord,, we’ve not even reached the half way point in his term yet….

Give Senator Dodd my best regards..

Coach | 7/5/2009, 11:39 am EST

Yeah, Sooth. And, it’s pretty frucking trivial, don’t you think? I mean, there are MILLIONS of people that understand he meant primaries and caucuses, yet you’re going to hold him at his words and actually think that HE THINKS there are 57 states. Really? A Harvard Grad thinks there are 57 states?

Trivialities, and self-fulfilling claims are ruling the day for the republicans…..keep fightin the good fight Sooth. Yeah, right….

SoothSayer | 7/5/2009, 1:27 pm EST

This is why you need to watch more than just MSNBCObama… sad…

LA Times May 2008 –
It is wonderful to be back in Oregon,” Obama said. “Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it.”
The Times’ conscientious Robin Abcarian thought she heard something different there. She checked her tape recorder. It had captured what he had actually said — 57 states now.

Reuters – may 9th 2008
On the campaign trail in Beaverton, Oregon, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama tells a crowd that’s he’s been to 57 states – with one left to go.

And here is the youtube clip as close as RS allows it to be posted.

Coach, Palin got the “dumb” status for media errors in reporting. For instance Palin never said that she could see Russia from her house (that was from a SNL skit), she never said that Iraq was a holy war (she was quoting Abraham Lincoln and the media misquoted Lincoln).

She didn’t understand the Bush Doctrine because there is no official Bush Doctrine and the person that made up that phase admitted that the Bush Doctrine had changed at least four times (and as much as seven times) since Bush got into office. The definition the interviewer used was for the First Strike Doctrine” which is a real doctrine and is decades if not centuries old, easily predating the Bush presidency. In the same interview, they also cut and pasted the interview to make her look dumb. They used the same method commenly used by SNL. The uncut version has her much more coherent.

She was asked questions that were never asked of Obama, Biden or Hillary Clinton. Those three were almost untouched by foreign affairs questions and when they were asked, they got it wrong (for instance, Obama wanted to see the president of Canada when Canada has a prime minister). Obama made some promises to one side and the opposite promises to the other side like he did with the auto union and the government of Canada. Obama still does that (he called the rocket attacks launched by the Palestinians on sleeping children cowardly yet has no problem launching missles in Pakistan that kill sleeping children). The media doesn’t care when Obama did it.

She never hunted wolves from either a plane or a helicopter (the story changes). That idea came from an opinion piece by Gloria Steinem and then reported by the media as fact.

Also the media also got on Palin’s case for going on a shopping spree that never happened and wearing expensive clothes bought by the RNC. The Obamas and Clintons were wearing more expensive clothes (each of Barack’s suits cost more than all the clothes for the Palins and if Hillary’s pants were actually sold, they would be sold for $10,000-$15,000 each) but because they were donated for free the media didn’t care.

At least Obama made that statement of visiting 57 states so it’s a legitamite complaint about Obama’s lack of competency. Also when going up against Biden, the real VP contender at the time, Palin is easily more competent.

FactsVSfiction | 7/5/2009, 5:57 pm EST

I don’t know if any of the myriad of net rumors/schmoomers hold water. I do find her charming in many ways, but in my opinion she was way over her head politically at this point, and took a lot of hits from disatisfied-with-8-years of Bush types. The pendulum was swinging the other way mo matter what, and Sarah just got in the way with the timing of the backlash. So did McCain, and he knew his stuff. Personally, I think she would do really well on T.V. in some kind of entertainment arena. She can be very likeable.

Coach | 7/5/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Greg, Did you just say Palin is more competent than Biden? Nuff said….

The rest of it was pure mumbo jumbo. But the last statement was astounding.

You are the one complaining about media against her, but you, yourself, skewed the facts on her term as governor. I’m going to listen to the few Alaskans that I know for myself. Most of the stuff about her is true. The stuff on Katie Couric wasn’t made up. She said that you can see Russia from Alaska. Maybe she didn’t say her house, but nevertheless, what’s seeing Russia got to do with anything?

Quit spinning for once, and then, maybe your complaints about media spin will hold some water.

DirtyDennis | 7/5/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Not that anyone really cares, but you can NOT see ‘Russia’ from Alaska. You can see a part of the former Soviet Union. But who cares? Just like who cares how many states Obama ‘visited.’

All politicians pander; Palin and Obama are politicians. He’s in, she’s not. Everything else is BS.

Somewhere In The Middle | 7/6/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Just to weigh in on the subject, I am not a gambling man, but I would wager pretty close to everything I have that she is going to end up with some lame ass talk show. I don’t see how she could run for any office higher than the one she holds now, given that she had become the butt of nearly every campaign joke.
I don’t think she necessarily got a fair shake in the media, but I definitely don’t think she was even remotely qualified to be V.P. either, and that made her a very easy target.
I can only hope that she is doing this so she can spend more time with her family and less time in our living rooms, but I highly doubt it.

bfoool | 7/6/2009, 8:00 pm EST

What ‘piece’ of USSR then?

Benito | 7/7/2009, 12:40 am EST

When she accepted the VP nomination, she knew she needed to bring her professional game up to another level, she never did. She knew that her family would get attacked as did Hilary and Chelsea before her (by even her twin maverick brother McCain in 1998), let face it she knew her family affairs would come out. But now she plays the victim card again, a card she played after those comical first extended interviews that we all enjoyed and SNL immortalized. But for the icing on the cake, she quits, because she does not want to be a lame duck governor, because the lawsuits keep coming, because it was the media’s fault, because seeing Russia from her house finally got to her, because its not fair that Alaskan’s paid her salary while she was running for the VP position, take your pick. So what does she tells us? Dear Mr. President, when things get tough, quit. Dear military men and women, if you are not having fun, quit. Dear son or daughter, if things are not going your way, quit. Sure, I agree when she first was introduced and gave a descent speech, sure the polls went up, but after the extended interviews, they went where they ended, down. She showed her true character, I real hope the book deal, Radio/ TV shows and the speech circuits make up for what her party has lost by her actions. She may go down in history as the quitter that twittered.

Why Sarah Palin did what she did? My analysis is that when Sarah Palin sat down and figured out the finances, she realized that $125,000 a year minus $600,000 plus whatever other ethics violations were in the works means that she will end up with a net loss of at least $475,000. That’s some fine reward for a great governor isn’t it? And that’s lowballing it.

Bella | 7/9/2009, 8:32 pm EST

I am a woman, and I am just so glad that Palin is hopefully fading from view,I think we should get out the woodchipper and toss her in.I am also a animal rights and gay rights activist, and have no use for her ,she is an embaressment to women.

Who would you chose to get a surgery from a person who worked hard and received an Ivy League education, or one who does not care about education (especially science) and drifts and somehow manages to get a degree. She showed her true character, by quitting (cut and run) just like her college years. She couldn’t even give a decent exit speech (her railing against the media was sweet until she ask them to go with her on a fishing trip to clarify her “Rambling Rose” comments). She was right for Alaska (with a population of less than 700,000), and her education matches it (journalism degree from the University of Idaho in 1987). But if you think and anyone who wants to get our country back on track after the fiasco of the last administration with our economy and the fabricated two wars then you along with the republican party are completely lost (are you surprise about the election results?). For the previous eight years we put up with a dullard president, but no more, you may try in 2012 but our eyes are open. I have heard that Republicans lost because God was against them, I can only say look at the candidates the Republican party put forward on their national ticket and don’t make the same mistake again. Mavericks, please, more like flash over substance (she quit and he fumbled) and the majority of voters saw it. We both know that she is cashing out, book deal, a show (Radio/TV), speaking engagements, she will keep her followers as long as she keeps the possibility open for running in 2012.

Paul | 7/13/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Can anyone real tell me that you were impressed by her exit speech? You can’t real believe that she is the only person that can win in 2012. You know, if she can’t take a joke, don’t get in the game, its politics, they all get kicked around. Let me paint you a picture, in my opinion, for the last eight years where the mantra was no regulation and no oversight and spread to all federal agencies and the justice department was filled by unqualified religious types and the dullard (ex-drunk) religious president started two wars of choice with extreme tax dollar spending, is anyone surprised with our current economic situation because of those choices. Sure “W” sucker the religious right to vote for him and that’s why he placed unqualified people in positions of responsibility and they failed (almost a “plan to fail”), do you forget Katrina, where the Director of FEMA Michael D. Brown, was relieved of his duties because of incompetence? Or can you forget disgraced White House correspondent James Guckert, AKA Jeff Gannon, the male escort, why was a male escort getting into the Whitehouse, hmmm? I know it was Barney Frank’s fault, he controls the county and republicans had their hands tied (even though 7 of the last 8 years they had the majority and the presidency to do something (fact or fiction?), but not the will to act). Oh, by the way I read that God blog, very funny, it reminds me of those TV evangelists who claim the talk to God and want so and so foreign country leader to be killed or such and such a us state to be punished by God for a court ruling that intelligent design is just another word for religion. We had enough of religious dullards in our government. If you believe that the USA has strayed from God then go out to your communities and preach to your neighbors, the sick, the shut ins, the poor and invite them to take part in your church, build a community. But I know that’s hard work we want a government official to do that for us, well they tried that and look where it left us, in the gutter, but our country does not quit and we will rise again. Do you remember how Ronald Reagan got us out of a recession? By spending and we will do the same. But she is just another “W” in heels and she is stringing the religious right along, she will sell you her books, her radio/TV shows and speaking engagements. Lastly, I do not want you to believe what I believe, so please keep writing, feel free, I am starting to enjoy this.

watch out matt, those crazy posts are an indication your site is being tested and about to be nailed with machine generated messages or a denial of service attack.

Protect what you have.

You don’t REALLY think Mr. Taibbi reads these, do you?

Anonymous | 7/16/2009, 5:43 pm EST

some, typically he avoids the bs and fluff, but some of the interesting or creative stuff he peruses.

DirtyDennis | 7/17/2009, 5:46 pm EST

“…some of the interesting or creative…”

Those two criteria limit the scope to less than 10% of the total. “Some” of 10%? That’s about 50% more than TD, with a margin of error of +- 5%, or thereabouts.

Anonymous | 7/19/2009, 12:25 pm EST

with all the disinformation available, that seems about par for the course.
apologies for the craziness of late directed at you and the blood.
It was necessary to understand the source of the problem.
It’s a puzzle, inside of a riddle within an enigma, man. You have to be a wizard to understand it and a rock to not be driven mad when you do.

Peace

DirtyDennis | 7/22/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Not a problem.

Life’s course is unfathomable; in course analysis, while unavoidable, should be tempered.

Anonymous | 7/22/2009, 10:46 pm EST

True, unless you are going all out on all cylinders, then, a little straying off course is understandable, as long as the intent is good and not given to self servitude or outright hatred.

Peace

You’d be surprised at what she’s willing to forgive, as long as you don’t forget and remember the right way.
