Huntsman to China

5/15/09, 11:54 pm EST

Having talked to a bevy of top Republicans for my GOP meltdown piece in the latest issue of the magazine, I can tell you that there was only one prospective presidential candidate who made any damn sense, and Obama has just coopted him, naming Utah governor John Huntsman Jr. as ambassador to China.

Like many of Obama’s best moves this makes sense both on policy and political levels. Politically, it appears to remove the charismatic and sensible Huntsman from the 2012 arena. On a policy level, the choice elevates a fluent Mandarin speaker with ambassadorial experience in Asia and a deep interest in trade issues into a pivotal post charged with engaging America’s most important “frien-emy.”

Well played Mr. President.

The fine print from AP says that Huntsman was being kicked out of the power structure of the Republican party for being a RINO. On social policy Huntsman is a liberal or at least left of McCain.

As a Mormon, he would be probably be bashed by the left and the right if he actually ran for president. Imagine all the door to door jokes that would mimic SNL’s old land shark routine. There just is no way he would have been a serious presidential contender.

Huntsman is hardly a RINO. He talks about being a moderate a lot but doesn’t actually have that many moderate positions. He’s got one, he backs civil unions with rights equal to marriage. That won’t even be moderate in 5 years though. On everything else, he’s a generic Republican.

He’s also pro-life and has always been pro-life unlike John McCain. True John McCain always tags himself that way but there have been interviews in which he’s said he is against overturning Roe v. Wade. Who can you be pro-life and support Roe v. Wade?

In a world right now where we have the Mickey Mouse Club running Washington…..the puppet and the masters that pull the strings, have actually done something smart.

Nancy Pelosi is the leader of the Democratic Party.

I think that it’s always a good idea to get the best person for the job, whatever the cost, for such an important ambassador position. Today, we need to facilitate international cooperation more than ever as we tackle the biggest problems such as severe global poverty. The Borgen Project has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

$550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

A win win for Obama and Huntsman. Also a big plus for China-US relations. It will be fascinating to see how this narrative play out in terms of Huntsman’s presidential ambition.

The chickens are too afraid of losing their position or being set upon by the jackasses to stand their ground and raise their voice against inequity and injustice, they trudge on silently hoping not to make waves and only cackle when they find agreement among all and it’s safe to do so.
And the greedy rats impose their greed on all others, even starting wars and supporting oppressive regimes to raise their hoarding of the wealth in the world.

Wouldn’t you much rather be like the rooster? Or is the fear that ‘here they come to kill the rooster’ too much? Perhaps we forget, ‘he ain’t gonna die’.

Sad predicament indeed, the jacka$ses have blinders on and don’t recognize that they are doing a harm to humanity as a whole with their obstruction to progress and disruptive, destructive and distracting behavior towards their brothers.

Among us we have examples of all of these, the rest of us are prevented from progress by having to deal with these people, so instead of making the steady sine wave-like progress we should be making, resolving problems rather than merely griping about them, we are stuck in an endless black circle of greed, cowardice and stubbornness.

Self centered people, whose separation from the human family is expressed in fear (chicken), or consumption without regard for the needs of others and hoarding what is needed by all (rats), or those that lash out at everything and anything not of their liking or fitting into their narrow, myopic view of the world(jacka$ses).

The Buddhist tradition tells us that life is kept in it’s circular trap, prevented from progress by centering on chickens, rats, and jacka$ses. When I first saw that wheel a few years ago I didn’t quite understand it, now it’s quite evident.

Wilhelm Reich wrote “Murder of The Christ”.
You might want to read it and try to understand what role you play in his theory, first few pages are available on Amazon.
