I think it’s great that Obama has a sense of humor and he wasn’t afraid to show it at this event. He does have a lot on his plate, though. Personally, I want him to take a leadership role in addressing global poverty. The U.S. should be doing way more to address the Millennium Development Goals. The plan to end world hunger has been getting seriously ignored.

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

$550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

Red Star, Winter Orbit | 5/11/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Hey Dave, can it…if throwing money at the problem were the solution, it would have been solved long ago.

What do you propose to do about the corrupt governments/dictators who will misuse said funds? Why is that the US has to foot the bill, why not the U.N.? Why not actual free trade?; all aid does is undercut farmers in poor regions and make them dependent on aid, and thus a foreign yoke. Poverty will not end so long as large and drastic changes occur in said societies where such problems are rampant…and no amount of money in the world will fix those problems (namely of religion, ethnicity, and scarcity of resources)

We, and the Western World, have been throwing money at the problem for over 30 years…when are the results coming in Dave?

Greg_D | 5/11/2009, 5:14 pm EST

Reading jokes written by other people six years out of date doesn’t making him funny. It makes the material funny. Laughing at Wanda’s jokes about wanting for Rush Limbaugh’s kidney’s to fail and Limbaugh as the 20th terrorist is more along the lines of tasteless than funny.

This is coming from the same man that didn’t like the New Yorker image of him dressed up in a traditional Muslim garb (and fist bumping his wife dressed up as an armed guerrilla) with an American flag on fire in the fire place. When that cartoon came out, the campaign spokeperson called that cartoon “tasteless and offensive.”

Vanhalen | 5/12/2009, 1:04 pm EST

You mean Obama actually had bad publicity during the campaign? Wow!

TheCoz | 5/12/2009, 1:43 pm EST

@ David

There will be plenty of hunger issues being resolved right here in America once we are all standing in breadlines with our wallets nearly empty from dubious government spending. Two wrongs do not make a right. Sorry Bush-haters.

CCo | 5/12/2009, 11:34 pm EST

David… for one, having the money required to “end” world hunger, does mean we have the ability to efficiently dole out resources, making sure that the food we produce actually gets into the hands of the needy and creating an agricultural system where the poor can feed themselves. I would also mention how much the U.S. and other industrialized nations currently do a lot(as in billions of dollars worth of programs) to combat hunger and poverty in the developing world. The issue is the corruption and instability within these 3rd World nation’s governments and economies (which, admittedly, we play a role in), not simply the amount of money the U.S. is giving. Secondly, the MDGs are internal affairs of nations themselves. The UN has established goals which many developing have looked to accomplish, but it is not the responsibility of the United States to see that each of the goals are met in all these individual countries. The pressure is ultimately on the countries who participate. The U.S. can only look to provide support (1. because that’s all they can do realistically and 2. because becoming overly involved in such issues violates state sovereignty and self-determination), which it has been doing quite rigorously for years. Maybe our defense budget is too high, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that the U.S. is ignoring world hunger, when statistics clearly state otherwise.

Why does everybody have to have a knee-jerk reaction only listening to an out of context snippet? Having listened to Wanda Sykes jokes within context, I thought she was edgy, but didn’t cross the line. The context for the comments was based on Rush Limbaugh openly rooting that Obama’s plan fail and thus the country would fail as well. She was comparing those comments to being a terrorist and wishing ill health on another person. Like I said, it was edgy material. There was nothing wrong with it. Unless, you just disagree with her political philosophy.

Mayday | 5/13/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Limbaugh’s a complete joke and deserves everything said about him. He brings it on himself. Anybody with that kind of forum, that specifically endorses failure by the president’s economic agenda, ergo, promoting continued recession, deserves all the blowback he gets.

He’s a blowhard, and a hypocrite who plants the seeds of racism, bigotry, sexism and basic hatred of color. He may not ACTUALLY say these things, but the premise is there, ALWAYS.

In fact, can anybody tell us what he DOES stand for?

Jed Clampett

They try so hard to find offenses being heaped upon them so they can justify the way they act upon others… look how they justify torture, ‘hey, everyone else is doing it’, ‘we saved a couple of “Americans”‘
Somehow, they keep trying to take Americans out of the human family… careful, they may just get their wish.

Octoberday | 5/14/2009, 12:02 am EST

Dear Mayday,

who plants the seeds of racism, bigotry, sexism and basic hatred of color. He may not ACTUALLY say these things, but the premise is there, ALWAYS.

Do you listen to Rush? Obviously not, just a typical statist response to ideas you disagree with.

He doesn’t ACTUALLY say those things but I swear he’s saying them even though he doesn’t say them but if you listen to him I swear you’ll hear it, I heard it even though he never says such things. SNARK

Mayday | 5/14/2009, 11:46 am EST

Octoberday: Can you give me one good reason that I WOULD listen to a radio show that I completely disagreed with the host on every single topic?

So, YES, I have listened, and YES, I still still he spreads hatred. Look at what he’s done for Bill Clinton. You people still hate him for reasons unknown.

If you want to support Limbpuke, feel free. But, don’t get mad when other people voice their own opinions about the man/beast. And, it’s a pretty safe bet that I’m not the only one who holds that opinion of the OxyPuke.

Octoberday | 5/14/2009, 12:28 pm EST

Mayday:

So you don’t listen to opposing ideas, yet you do listen to Limbaugh. What? You are a master of incoherent ramblings.

PS: Thanks for the permission to support Limbaugh that really touched my heart now that I have your approval. Is calling someone Limpuke and man/beast hateful? And who cares if you aren’t the only one that holds such opinions, that proves nothing.

Jim Donnelly | 5/14/2009, 10:58 pm EST

Limbaugh and his ilk are a stain on the fabric of American society. He is a purveyer of racism, elitism and sexism through a golden voice and scary abilities. His listeners need “The Right Wing Deprogrammer’ from Regroupthink.

Tim F | 5/15/2009, 12:58 am EST

Dear Jim Donnelly,

I thought Bill Clinton left a stain on history that may never come out.

Octoberday | 5/15/2009, 1:10 am EST

He is a purveyer of racism, elitism and sexism.

PROVE IT.

Every conservative discovers, sooner or later, that to criticize liberal ideas is to be adjudged guilty of some “-ism” or diagnosed with a “phobia.”

In The Vision of the Anointed, Thomas Sowell describes how liberals employ “mascots” and “targets” to advance their policy aims. By positioning themselves as defenders of “mascots,” liberals set a rhetorical trap whereby any attack on their policies is denounced as an attack on the (allegedly) victimized and downtrodden people whom those policies are supposed to benefit.

The problem, of course, is that this prevents rational discussion of policy.

BTW, it’s RAAAAACISM! (Remember, there are five A’s in “RAAAAACISM!” Some of you have been slacking off and trying to get by with one.)

Mayday | 5/15/2009, 10:37 am EST

Octoberday: By saying that I HAVE listened to Limbaugh and disagree with him makes me a master of incoherent ramblings?

Ever seen a movie you didn’t like? Ever watched a ballgame that disappointed you? Ever watched an episode of 24 and came away empty-handed? Ever watched Fox News and came away dumber?

Yet, I’m incoherent?

DirtyDennis | 5/16/2009, 7:38 am EST

Vewy good. That CAN’T be shapeshifter.

Torey | 5/18/2009, 1:52 pm EST

I actually think that it’s funny everyone on here who has a republican view is trying to argue with the democratic view when we are on a discussion about a few jokes at a congressional dinner on a LIBERAL magazine article.

Octoberday and Mayday you both make good points but there is seriously no end to your arguement; Octorberday you’re gonna get no where. Mayday is an ignorant Democrat who likes to shake around the response with more questions and no sense. Octoberday, you make good points but the fact is Mayday doesn’t have to listen to something he doesn’t like. Obviously he HAS listened to Rush in order to not like him. So to tell him he’s a liar only makes you seem ignorant as well. It’s best just to ignore him and waft in your self glory while you can before more comments are set in like “You Wanted To Know” who obviously has more of an emoitional view on those types of subjects rather than looking at the reason WHY Republicans target the things they do. There is a reason and most of it is pretty legit. Though conservatives can get pretty crazy as far as sense goes, but that doesn’t mean Nancy Pelosi can’t catch some heat either.

As for Rush Limbaugh, he makes very realisitic and selfless points that would do this country some good if they actually listened, and other times I believe he gets so worked up over the ungodly amount of stress Obama is putting this country through that he doesn’t even know what he is saying. Call him ignorant, call him racist, sexist, whatever you want but the fact is that he shares his opinion just like all of you do too and he is free to share it. To wish on someone a fatal condition just because of his voice of opinion crosses the line when funny comes in to play. Wanda did not show him any ounce of respect, when she has probably never met the man in her life. Simple biased opinion shouldn’t be welcomed. Obama’s comment: pretty funny. Being related to Cheney I believe he has a family right to make a comcial joke about an accident and his former accusations. If you noticed, he didn’t say that he should die, or that he should be labeled as a beast/animal because of his alleged decisions.

Also, before my rambling is done I do believe that even though Cheney though we should invade Iraq, it was congress and the Senate who also agreed to it as well, that means DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS. The whole government is to blame for the shape we are in, not just two people (Bush,Cheney).
