It’s not the spending on all the big fancy iteams. Some of the big fancy iteams are already decades old (from many naval ships, aircraft and even military tanks). The military is one big welfare state with over a million trooper and tens of thousands of civilians. Everything from pay to basic equipment to housing, to food to medical expenses is paid in that budget.

The second major expense is upkeep of equipment including fuel (in the 1980s a civilian helicopter cost $300 per hour in fuel alone and modern tanks get 8 gallons to the mile) and ammo (During the Vietnam War, it was estimated that 100,000 rounds of ammo were used per enemy killed).

It’s no more bloated than Medicaid which spends twice the amount per person than if the government just bought those people private insurance instead or unemployment/welfare which would pay for 12 million people at $30,000 a year. 75% of households make under $59,000 a year. Right now about 5.7 million people are collecting unemployment according to CNN. In March of 2007 there were 1.16 people on welfare. Note that at least for welfare, the states also pitch in so the amount given per person might be double.

Greg, I have to question your insurance numbers. I don’t have a company plan and as a 40 yr old single male good health is almost $4000 per year and going up over 10% per year. I have a friend who has looked into replacing the plan he and his wife have and he been told it would cost over 1500 per month to replace it. they are in perfect health in their late 50’s.

Can’t imagine what is would cost for a 20 yr old married couple in prime child bearing years.

why stop the production of the f22? it can out beat any modern day fighter. but our soldiers need new armour like titanium, and a new assault rifle ammunition like the 6.8mm round
