The Great Communicator Takes to Al-Arabiya

So this is what it’s like to have a Reagan of our own.

How much confidence and sense of purpose does it take for a man who was pilloried by the fever-swamps as a “secret Muslim” throughout the primary and general elections to give his first Presidential interview not to the liberal loyalists at MSNBC, but to Al-Arabiya, an Arab TV network with a reach of 23 million viewers. (UPDATE: and to talk about his Muslim family members[!])

This is public diplomacy, my friends. This is a man who is serious about winning back hearts and minds. This is the power of Barack Hussein Obama’s celebrity at its height, leveraged to speak to the Arab Street.

What’s “smart power”?

This is smart power.

A mitzvah; almost a miracle. Each Obama day is at the least a joy, and at times an astonishment. Can any of us imagine what the first weeks of McCain would have been like, intellectually and emotionally?

SoothSayer | 1/27/2009, 1:14 am EST

The only people happier than Dems about Obama’s election are the terrorists.

Greg D | 1/27/2009, 1:58 am EST

That’s hardly new smart power. Elie Nakouzi of Al Arabiya interviewed President (of the time) George W. Bush.

Dantanner | 1/27/2009, 3:10 am EST

US policies in the past have been disastrous for the world. Now we as Americans have someone who knows what he is doing..give him a hand please.

tajed clempt | 1/27/2009, 8:28 am EST

Obama lifts a hand, raises a nation!

lupercal | 1/27/2009, 11:50 am EST

apparently politico gossip columnist carol e. lee doesn’t think you should be gushing. nor do the folks over at drudge, as jake tapper’s ‘political punch’ blog can testify. maybe you haven’t received the memo…

Mayday | 1/27/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Sooth, maybe you should explain to us dumbasses why the terrorists would be happy. Maybe expand on your childish theory. Maybe elaborate on your hillbilly attitude?

Thanks, much appreciated. But, I guess what you’re REALLY saying, is that along with the 70% of Americans that are happy with Obama, so is the rest of the world!!!

tajed clempt | 1/27/2009, 1:22 pm EST

Obama lifts his leg and urinates on a nation!

Stand Up Chuck | 1/27/2009, 1:43 pm EST

To Dantanner,

US policies have indeed been disastrous, defeating slavery (which democrats supported), fascism, communism, totalitarianism, how disastrous. Obama does know what he is doing, just let him ask our 44th President Greg Craig what his executive orders mean.

jeffery mcnary | 1/27/2009, 1:56 pm EST

shucks, three cover stories, an early endorsement, and not even a reach around. drag.

az | 1/27/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Thank God Obama is our president!!!

“You’re afraid if I do it my way, I just might succeed, then what was your life about anyway?” Any Given Sunday

This applies to the conservatives who are obstructing, or trying to obstruct, progress.

If nationalizing the banks actually works and pulls us out of this recession, then how can they decry it as the dreaded soci@lism? It already exists anyway, in the form of air traffic control, u.s. post office, subsidization of MANY industries, medicaid, welfare, etc…..

If Obama hunts down and kills or persecutes bin Laden, then how can Democrats/liberals be called ’soft’? George Bush had 7 years to do it and gave a relatively half-assed effort.

That leaves the conservatives with guns, god, and gays. Good luck holding onto a constituency with those ideals…….

SoothSayer | 1/27/2009, 4:25 pm EST

May, Not going to argue with you calling yourself a dumb ass, if the shoes fits :)

What is OBL’s issue with the US and Saudi’s? anyone remember? Because we “defiled” the sacred lands of Saudi Arabia by putting “infidel” troops, especially female “infidel” troops at Saudi airbases as part of the First Gulf War. Think an apology is going to make him happy? Can’t unring a bell, we did it his going to make us pay for.
Try to remember how well Carter did with his foreign policy.

Mayday | 1/27/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Sootcher: You just admitted that the reason we were attacked by OBL is because he invaded their lands. Yet, you and yours have a problem with acknowledging that and getting out.

Basically, what you’re saying is this: We, the U.S., don’t care why there is hatred for us. Our interests outweigh moral fortitutde? Is that what you’re saying?

Which is exactly why I called it a hillbilly attitude. It’s the same attitude that Americans have dumped on the blacks, the mexicans, the indians, and now the muslims. It’s time to change that attitude.

As far as Carter’s policies: He IS the one that brokered the hostage release, isn’t he? He IS the one who realized that we should stop propping up these radical nations by purchasing their oil.

Opinions vary Sooth. Remember that

Mayday | 1/27/2009, 5:30 pm EST

Check that: Because WE invaded their holy lands……

SoothSayer | 1/27/2009, 6:31 pm EST

May, please refresh my memory on the US “invasion of Saudi Arabia”. I missed that one.

We as part of a UN sanctioned action and after extensive negotiations with Iraq to leave Kuwait invaded Kuwait to remove the Iraqis and then drove them back to their own country. It was all over the news, I am sure you saw it, RS probably even mentioned it once.

OBL didn’t despise America because we sent the Iraqi’s home from Kuwait, but because we, as part of the UN action, STATIONED non-Muslim troops in Saudi Arabia, and specifically female troops.

Obameter | 1/27/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Finally, our dove may be greater than their hawk.

Sal Mineo | 1/28/2009, 1:08 am EST

Holy crap, we have a president who can think and speak!

Bono's Pride | 1/28/2009, 9:58 am EST

OK-RS, you bunch off censorship candyasses–leave it alone!
mayday, i’ll be here to remind you about what you wrote today–IN 4 YEARS from now when you’re crying (and you will be crying) WTF happened????
Soothsayer, don’t ever stop!

Mayday | 1/28/2009, 11:23 am EST

Boner’s Pride: Rah Rah! America man! Go America! Kill all arabs. Go America.!!!

May I, in four years, remind you of whatever? When you’re crying? Wait, you already are. Nevermind.

Sooth: By admitting that we stationed troops in Saudi Arabia, you’re admitting our invasion. To the dissenting arab world, stationing troops is no different than invading……..Thanks for confirming my argument.

Bono's Pride | 1/28/2009, 1:08 pm EST

MayArab, you’re showing your colors–how embarassing.

SoothSayer | 1/28/2009, 3:05 pm EST

MD you need to get a dictionary and learn the definition of invasion. Went you place troop on someone’s soil with at their request it is not an invasion.

Bono's Pride | 1/28/2009, 3:15 pm EST

Mayday, while you’re getting a dictionary also get some basic reading comprehension books. It’ll help you understand what people are saying in their posts!

Mayday | 1/28/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Not so Soothing: “Went you place troop on someone’s soil with at their request it is not an invasion.”

And now you see the conflict. WE define our installments in Saudi etc., as something that’s been requested. Plenty of people in the Arab world call it an invasion. It’s exactly what bin Laden is talking about. But, then, the opinion of the dissenter isn’t something you’re interested in hearing, is it?

Did the people of Iraq ‘request’ our military installations? By people, I mean, the people, not the government officials. Obviously they didn’t approve, as witnessed by the massive insurgency.

Good luck spreading freedom at the end of a gun. It’s exactly what causes insurgencies and uprisings.

Bono, you’re just a joke. Further comments towards you would be wasted breath.

Bono's Pride | 1/28/2009, 6:11 pm EST

I’m crushed mayday, someone of your intellectual prowess calling me a joke:(

tajed clempt | 1/29/2009, 8:19 am EST

This thread has really opened my mind to some new possibilities. I am in awe. The yummy assortment of advertised products paired with such stimulating intellectual exchange makes me want to be the best consumer I can be. However, regarding the content of the thread, I am hoping Jed will weigh in and set us all straight because I don’t know what to think.

ditto | 1/29/2009, 12:21 pm EST

It’s no fun with him and no fun without him.

6 string galliath | 1/29/2009, 1:22 pm EST

just a bunch of political mumble jumble. He sounds like he’s still campaigning. Sounds like he feels sorry for the terrorists, there probably laughing their heads off. Of course the Rolling Stone is in bed with the guy, and worships his every move. OH POWERFUL AND ALL MIGHTY SAVIOR, I’M NOT WORTHY. RS, what a joke you have become.
