Richardson Drops Out as Commerce Secretary Designate

1/4/09, 3:09 pm EST

Bill Richardson won’t be Obama’s Commerce Secretary, having dropped out over pay-to-play allegations that he helped steer state $1.5 million in New Mexico state contracts to a company that donated to his PACs.

Richardson has denied any wrongdoing but withdrew, he says, to not bog down the early days of the Obama administration with a difficult confirmation process.

I’m disappointed. I was excited to see what Richardson might do to reinvent the now-largely-ceremonial post into an important locus of power within the administration, helping to steer American business toward a greener economy.

If this were the first Bush administration in 2001, such a controversy would have gone largely unnoticed. Bush’s list of appointees was a case-study in conflict of interest. You can rail about the corruption of the Democrats all you like, but where is the balance? By contrast, Richardson’s withdrawal is an act of noble humility.

Sad, I really do (did?) like Richardson. I think he should have held a more important foreign policy post to begin with, though. Anyway, in the midst of Republican scandals, I asserted that there is a culture of inherent corruption in politics; to which I got called a Bush defender. Blago and Richardson (for starters) should show otherwise. And no, this has nothing to do with Obama.

Since the ’80s, the Department of Commerce has done little to address the undercutting of Main Street enterprise, the abandonment of US manufacturing base, the erosion of public infrastructure, the rampant and shortsighted global outsourcing of jobs, and the irresponsible (maybe criminal) diversion of taxes to overseas tax havens.

A prospective Obama administration should nominate Margot Dorfman for secretary of commerce.
As CEO of the U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Dorfman has supported sustainable business development, durable economic policies, community entrepreneurship, worker education, and small business development for women and people of color. She has real-world experience, too. Dorfman worked for General Mills and several small enterprises.

When the U.S. Chamber of Commerce battled against raising the federal minimum wage in 2007, Dorfman and the Women’s Chamber led the fight to raise it. “We all lose when American workers are underpaid,” she said. She has been a leading voice with Business for Shared Prosperity, a national network of forward-thinking business leaders.

Also in the Commerce Dept arena, Obama would do well to appoint Van Jones, of the Ella Baker Center, to direct the department’s new “green jobs initiative,” and John Arensmeyer, of Small Business Majority, to oversee the Economic Development Administration.

I don’t think WildThing is particularly focusing on Democrats although that would be natural for him. He seems to be saying that since they’re in power, it’s their turn to have the light shined on them. That’s okay, corrupt is corrupt, who gives a wit about party affiliation.

You both are saying the same thing, a culture of corruption exists. A pox on both their houses.

Give him a break, he’s been consumed for so long that he hasn’t realized the problem yet even though he states it without realizing it. Our system has been corrupted almost completely, much like our society seems to be. I’m wondering what planet he hopes to find these pros on, cause they are obviously not here or they would have done something to fix it, don’t you think? Unless they are letting it get more screwed up so they can charge more for repairs.

Since he’s partisan to the level of blindness, he hopes to convince others that republican crooks are less harmful than democratic crooks. In the long run they help each other, that’s the problem with a two party system, once they decide to cooperate against the public and for their benefit behind the scenes, there’s no way to work against them short of violence… even that doesn’t work sometimes, look at the Vietnam war and the protesters; rather than take a poll and risk having to return our troops home, they chose to make war on their own people until military officers started refusing their missions, leadership realized they might cause a real revolution at home… the officers started questioning the immorality of the missions the corporate leadership was sending them on. Particularly offensive was Nixon’s campaign of blanket bombing civilian centers much like a certain German did in the 30s and 40s.

It begs the question… who does he think the pros are? where will they come from? is there a hidden pool of talent somewhere with McCain’s solution to win the Iraq war?

Peace

WildThing,

You mean back-door deals like the ’sane’ Reagean did trading arms for hostages?

Delta Wild Man | 1/4/2009, 6:24 pm EST

We’ve CHANGED the face of the Culture of Corruption,, that’s all.
That Culture of Corruption is still there,, and it’s growing..
Bail outs and Stimulus packages,,, there’s going to be a lot of politicians on both sides of the isle who will be getting kick backs from major corporations..
There will be a bunch of Democrats go down because of things like this.
Mind you I say ” A BUNCH OF DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO FALL ” only because there are more of them in Washington during this time of uncertainty.
WASHINGTON IS BROKEN, HAS BEEN FOR YEARS.
When something is broken, you don’t use mentally retarded people to fix the problem, you bring in the Pros that have a record of fixing problems like these we face today. But once again, during this election, just as the ones that has preceded it for the last few decades,, we’ve chosen the mentally retarded to solve the problem.
Oh, and before you start accusing me of calling our first Black President ” Mentally Retarded “, let me remind you that Ronald Reagan was our last sane President..

Let’s hope that when our current politicians back door deals come to light,, they will fall upon their swords and bring back a little honor to their family name.

Richardson deserved the post, he’s most qualified. Richardson shouldn’t have resigned, or have been pressured to..if indeed he was - period. Clinton pay back?

Wow, looks like the vultures were waiting for a sheep to fall off the mountain to pounce and consume it, whether it was dead or not.

Ah, Republicans. Your bitter tears taste so sweet.

Sorghetti | 1/4/2009, 3:46 pm EST

More Clinton era sleaze, with still more to come. Change? Ha ha. The major political parties are hard to distinguish from organized crime these days.

NewportRacer | 1/4/2009, 3:46 pm EST

The slime of the Clintonistas continues.
