Got to mention this because it happened near here in Lewisvile as well.

Seems that in a brilliant piece of irony, mother nature has highlighted her current plight with the TN spillage by causing the effluent of the hamptons (or some other NY upscale hood) to be backed up and poured into the neighbourhoods of some poorer folks in order to prevent damage to the wealthy properties. I guess she’s just illustrating for us what I’ve been saying for some time now. The wealthy are sh!tting on the rest of us. They must be brought in line.

Peace

They don’t want you to know the full extent of the problem. The heavy metals contained in the sludge alone is enough to kill wildlife in the area for decades, do you really think they want you to know that the waters are now poisoned because some executive decided it was better to show profits by not disposing of waste properly. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine, his home is far from the sludge… that sludge mess, that’s for the little people to deal with and the government, because even though government is bad, they are good at covering up for criminals in Versacci suits and they are useful when we have to spend money on fixing corporate criminals’ messes. They made millions, why are they not fined millions when we find out just how badly they have acted?

Peace

DirtyDennis | 12/30/2008, 1:22 pm EST

So, can we assume that Israel believes the ‘answer’ to the ‘Palestinian Problem’ is air strikes?

Where does Israel get its $$$$ to afford all the military hardware? They an oil producing country?

You look on a map and they’re about half the size of Portugal. How do they do that?

Coach | 12/30/2008, 12:00 pm EST

Bloody: The thing is, by simply NOT covering the story, they’re setting themselves up to be accused of conspiracy. Which leads one to the question: Why WOULDN’T this be big news?

To all, for the record: There is no such thing as ‘clean coal’, or ‘clean oil’. Don’t be duped.

Coach and Tin -

I don’t doubt that folks are conspiring to keep a tight lid on this thing. After all, as DD pointed out this is not good for business. I do find it a bit implausible that the administration is behind it. I have to admit, though, I am hearing rumors that Federal agents have the area on lock down to outsiders, which is a bit creepy. So, it would not surprise me to learn that my inclination is not correct. Anyway, I think that the most pernicious thing about this is the apathy of the media. In the end, this story sucks for ratings. Investigating it would require actual research; reporting on it would alienate certain segments of the corporate establishment, not to mention news consumers. I think these are probably the most significant reasons why the event has not been covered. I take the time to write about it here because I think that’s the real value of forums like this one. It’s a place to raise real issues not endlessly debate Iraq and make the same baseless speculations about the Bush administration or whether Libs/Cons are the heroes/villains.

TinFoilHat | 12/28/2008, 5:21 pm EST

Perhaps since news organizations are simply corporations, they work together to promote corporate interests in tandem. Maybe no traditional conspiracy is required since they are all singing out of the same hymn book. Most newsroom floors are littered with scraps of stories killed by editors and executives. The journalists may be largely liberal, but those in control are overwhelmingly conservative.

KStone | 12/28/2008, 4:02 pm EST

It was a lousy year because Hillary and women at large got rooked out of the Big House. Ba Humnbug.

Redneck Bob | 12/28/2008, 1:11 pm EST

Every election candidates make promise they don’t execute on, is that a conspiracy also?

I CA nothing gets done because projects have 5-10 years of EIR’s to research, written, and then debated before you can turn a shovel of dirt. I think the reason might be more tied to bureaucracy rather than a vast oil company conspiracy.

TinFoilHat | 12/27/2008, 9:12 pm EST

Coach,

A conspiracy is just a hidden agreement between two or more parties. To me it seems naive not to consider the possibility. Then again, I’m just a guy in a aluminum beanie.

TinFoilHat | 12/27/2008, 2:16 pm EST

After DN covered it, all of the media has followed on with the Tennessee story (so as to not look bad?).

But in mid December, when the Senate Armed Services Committee issued a report finding former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other high officials responsible for abusive treatment of detainees in Guantanamo, Iraq and Afghanistan, only a couple of papers even covered it. Those that did buried it on later pages. Why is that?

Also, why is it that the coverage of Somalia (a crisis largely caused by US foreign policy) has been sparsely (and misleadingly) covered, while Dar-fur (caused by China’s foreign policy) has been covered and re-covered? Why is that? Hmmm..

Coach | 12/27/2008, 11:52 am EST

Bloody Oil: “Wake up and smell the fly ash, there’s no conspiracy”…….

Conspira cies have been uncovered forever. Since the beginning of time, yet some people still refuse to believe they exist…….you can’t prove there isn’t one, yet, there’s still a chance that I’m right, and there IS a conspiracy.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and opinions vary. Yet, what matters, is what’s provable.

Redneck: Huh? Are you another anti-conspiracy guy? Every single year bonds are sold in California supporting mass transportation, yet every year, nothing gets done. Explanation enough for you?

Redneck Bob | 12/26/2008, 10:56 pm EST

Please share you wisdumb on public transportation in Californacation

blood for oil of olay | 12/26/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Coach, At the risk, of entering into a discussion of the pseudo-issues that abound on this forum, I doubt very much that the media blackout has anything to do with the villainous bushney boys. This has to do with the general decline of the media as a result of an indifferent public (or is it the other way around?).

The Harriman story is just too yucky and boring for them to touch. It’s not nearly as riveting as psychopaths in Santa suits or missing cruise ship passengers. Again, if all this sludge came out of Brittney’s twat or was coming across the border or was being handed out to automakers, there would be no end to the ‘analysis’. I see it as more of an indication that the population as a whole has become lulled into indifference about anything but the same tired issues that are regurgitated every day. Wake up and smell the fly ash, there’s no conspiracy; we’re simply a nation of tired fat imbeciles with attention spans of spider monkies.

DirtyDennis | 12/26/2008, 4:36 pm EST

2.6 was the first ‘estimate.’ It’s now been revised to 5.4. Adjusted?

Coach, they’re business people. You know, what’s good for business …

Actually, Billy Boy got lobbied hard when some legislation came up to ‘regulate’ this stuff. And he caved. They didn’t have to lobby Bushney; it was warm embraces all around.

Coach | 12/26/2008, 4:29 pm EST

Well, boys. We all know that if it was a terrorist that made the coal dam bust, we’d be hearing about it 24/7.

Just like oil spills, toxic waste dumps, stack emissions, and now, coal dam breaks, certain news items are suppressed. Not sure why. Maybe it’s the same theory in place that has oppressed electric cars, or mass transportation in California, or, or, or, or,………

Oh, wait. George Bush and Penis Cheney are oil men! I forgot!

blood for oil of olay | 12/26/2008, 3:37 pm EST

Yep, this thing in Harriman is ugly. I would be apoplectic with rage if I lived there and a bunch of bureaucrats were telling me that nasty stuff was okay. This is a total outrage, yet it’s hardly been noted in the media. I read that something like 2.6 million cubic yards were released. Still, they’re saying not to worry because the stuff is not poisonous. Well, there’s a saying: the poison is in the dose. 2.6 million cubic yards sounds like one helluva does.

(sorry, for the last time I will correct myself, it happened at the Kingston Steam Plant in Harriman)

DirtyDennis | 12/26/2008, 3:22 pm EST

Ole,

Happened on Monday and only now are reports surfacing and only after it was discovered the spill was twice as large as the EPA reported. Same EPA who says the water’s ‘okay.’

Trust your gov’t agency; they care about you.

blood for oil of olay | 12/26/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Ah, whoops, in my haste I wrote ‘Knoxville’. I meant Kingston.

blood for oil of olay | 12/26/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Tim,

I would like to see a piece on the recent environmental disaster in Knoxville, TN the media blackout that seems to be in effect. Does anyone besides me find this absolutely reprehensible? Folks, if you haven’t heard the news, on December 22, there was a massive release of coal ash, now covering hundreds of acres; this material contains significant quantities of heavy metals like arsenic, lead and selenium, which can cause cancer and neurological problems. Between then and now, most of the country has been kept in the dark. Funny thing is, if this stuff had poured out of Brittney Spears’ vag instead of a coal plant, all the stations would be providing minute-to-minute coverage.

DirtyDennis | 12/25/2008, 7:50 pm EST

And you, Wild Thing. And you.

Delta Wild Man | 12/25/2008, 7:39 pm EST

Dirt Dennis, Tim, all the rest of ya’ll:

I wish you and them who you love a very merry Christmas and one hell of a New Year.

P.S.
Don’t Drink & Drive on that New Years Eve thang..

DirtyDennis | 12/25/2008, 4:48 pm EST

Even though that Libby guy was pardoned, wasn’t his crime a felony? And if convicted of a felon, isn’t a person denied the vote, pardon or no?

We’ve got to root them out, one by one.

Obameter | 12/25/2008, 3:39 pm EST

All the joy of the Season!
