Obama’s Cabinet Picks

11/24/08, 5:19 pm EST

I was on NPR’s San Francisco affiliate on Friday discussing Obama’s cabinet picks.

My top point: The Clinton and Daschle picks have to be seen in concert. Sending Hillary to Foggy Bottom clears out a competing center of power from the Senate. It also sets up Tom Daschle, the former Senate Majority Leader, to become the most powerful Health and Human Services secretary ever.

Daschle, who still retains a powerbase of his own in the Senate, will now be free to steward the drive toward universal healthcare — without all of the psychodrama of the Hillarycare fiasco.

The Clinton State Department appointment is not without its fallbacks. As we’ve seen in the hemming and hawing over her accepting the post, there is little that Hillary touches that doesn’t become imbued with high theatrics. Her knack for turning a simple yes-or-no question into a week-long drama is in itself a cautionary tale.

But I think State is the best place to take advantage of the Clintons, plural. Hillary is clearly not intimidated by anyone. And she’ll likely bring Bill in tow wherever she goes. She’ll be able to tap into his experience. And he’ll be serving in the role to which he’s currently best suited: Acting as America’s roving goodwill ambassador.

Both picks reflect canny poiltics on Obama’s part, but politics that work in the service of aggressive policy ends — on both the domestic and international front.

Those points would be great had he not given her total control over ambassadors which is the lifeblood of donership. And had Dascles’ wife not been one of the top 10 lobbyists in dc – not exactly sticking with his promises. And lastly in a time of war you believe heath and hs is more important? Please had she wanted that she’d have it. They have to deal with Kennedy’s ego. Not to mention the fact that Obama had promised roles in State to his loyal aides, guess what sold them out in the deal with HRC. Seriously stop trying to make his choices always seem superb, it makes you look like a lemming.

I agree. As long as Hilary is in Washington, so will Bill. ^ Hey, I noticed the phone ad to the right and thought I should mention the Krave as a better alternative. I work with the Krave and it’s a great phone…

If the Democrats wanted all of the Clinton people back in office, why not just pick Hillary as the nominee?
Where’s the beef err Change?

Hillary is now just four mysterious deaths away from the Presidency…

You can’t brush off her in the State position by using Bill in the same sentence. Se is her own woman. She thinks everyone opposed to Israel should be cluster bombed; Bill’s idea of peace is a hell of lot more balanced.

The appointment of Hillary to those actively involved in the effort to defeat her, was almost exclusively based on her hard-line, pro-war, pro-business I’m the star now so everyone back off, attitiude and ideology.

So we original Obama supporters have, in fact, been bamboozled- big time. Because what’s actually happening, to those with an interest in policy rather than propaganda, is that rather than rise up anew out of the ashes, we’re all being dragged down, into a “share the hole” mentality.

So how does it feel America!?
To be part of a new America where our President-elect will strive mightily to not lift you up out of your ruts, but down -way down – with the help of Bill and Hillary Clinton of course because Democrats are complete incompetents unless they’re involved – way down until we’re standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Sarah the turkey-hacker, Lieberman the creepy back-stabber, Rahm the special interests pool boy and Joe the tax-evading unlicensed plumber/ one note singer.

WOW! Is that some fu***** change, or what?
amiright, Todd??

Smell that

D&C, what’s your point? I guess you think the last 8 years were better than the Clinton 8? Now THAT’S a joke….

seriously rs, you have no problem with someone who once promised to obliterate iran being named secretary of state? are you guys gonna turn into obama’s fox news?

TinFoilHat | 11/27/2008, 11:30 pm EST

We all knew that Obama was veering toward the establishment line as the campaign wore on. It is up to us, all of us, to push Obama toward his promise of ‘change we can believe in’. We have the responsibility to appeal to his conscience and make him do the things he knows are right. The difference is that (for a change) we know he DOES have a conscience.

Politics, you gotta love it. The professor who called Hillary a monster is working on the State Department transition team. I have a feeling the two will become fast friends. I’m sure Hil will appreciate the prof’s fervor as much as the prof will admire Hil’s work ethics.

I don’t know if I’m more offended by Bush’s SISTER interviewing him or by the MSM’s soft-pedaling of the affair. He’s also ‘proud’ that he didn’t forsake his values in Washington. Let’s see …

Ignorance (as demonstrated by the interview)? Check.

Disrespect for others (as demonstrated by invading a sovereign country, perhaps three; spying on citizens; torturing, gutting FEMA and environmental laws)? Check.

Ignorance (I know, I know, but the man-child is SO ignorant it requires reinforcing)? Check.

I’m sure others (Coach? Tinman?) can flesh out the list better than I. But I can’t conclude without mentioning his pride in freeing 50 Mil (his numbers). I wonder if he’s counting the 3 mil (at last count I saw) displaced Iraqis. They’re now free to wander the earth homeless.

OR Laura’s ‘pleasure’ (you can’t expect anyone not equal to the man in ignorance to live with him all these years, can you?) in ‘liberating’ the women of Afghanistan. When’s the last time she was there? In fact, how could she know? Liberated? It’s a war zone for Christ’s sake. If they’re so liberated, why isn’t she ‘communing’ with them? What’s that? In spirit? Oh.

One has to admit that the Georgie Porgie administration has had the remarkable effect of ELEVATING the quality of his two GOP predecessors. Not much, I admit.

And people wonder why I am ideologically repulsed by the Right. As long as they keep ‘promoting’ IDIOTS into positions of power they can count on my complete and utter disdain.

PS Wow, got an internet error message about the server being down. Looks like the urban terrorists broke through RS’ defenses.

“Hemming and hawing”? You mean, like the week it took Rahm Emanuel to accept the chief of staff appointment?

Are you even capable of writing about Hillary Clinton without adopting what used to be the right-wing talking points? Why were those same talking points so fondly embraced by self-identified liberals in this year’s election?

It really gets tiresome.

Obameter | 12/5/2008, 7:49 pm EST

Isn’t it best to have Hillary in the Cabinet toeing policy line than in the Senate toeing her own line? State could be the perfect place for her.

Also, change doesn’t mean tossing over every Washington insider for new blood. It means actually implementing Obamas’ promises within the existing framework. It’s a difficult job as Jimmy Carter found out. He got nothing done in Congress. Barack must stick to his guns and bend the powerful and influential around to his way of thinking. Difficult but not impossible. Give them roles in his Cabinet following his game plan. It’s certainly way too early to be shooting down his administration picks before we see how it all pans out. I think it will be a whole new ball game.
