The Sarah and Ted Show

10/28/08, 1:40 am EST

This Ted Stevens fiasco is baggage of the McCain camp’s own choosing. Before they added Sarah Palin to the ticket, Alaska was anything but Main Street America. Under the old rules, Steven’s corruption scandal could well have blown over as a parochial scandal of the great, oily North.

But since picking Palin, McCain & Co. have staked out Alaska as the living, beating heart of American authenticity. And so, today, Ted Steven’s felonious betrayal of the public trust is going to allow Democrats to campaign like it’s 2006 — against the Republican “culture of corruption” that proved so electorally toxic to the GOP two years ago.

Let’s remember that the McCain camp knew in late July that Stevens was under indictment and demanding a speedy trial that would put Alaska’s frontier ethics front-and-center in the days before the election.

And yet, thanks to a vetting free Veepstakes, in August the campaign chose Palin, who not only owes her governorship to Stevens’ throaty endorsement, but as recently as 2005 served as the director of “Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service” 527 group.

As usual, the intrepid Anchorage Daily News offers the go-to coverage of the Stevens/Palin entanglements. This adn.com video offers a glimpse of their buddy-buddy relationship:

At minute 1:13 you can see the last-minute 2006 campaign commercial in which Stevens passes the baton to Palin’s “new generation” of leadership, asking his fellow Alaskans to “help Sarah become governor, which we all want to see.”

Half way through, we see Palin and Stevens joshing around together at a press conference from this past July — post the FBI raid of Stevens’ home, but just prior to his indictment. Stevens chummily calls it “The Sarah and Ted Show.”

Minute 3:39

Stevens: Hell, I don’t know if you know it but when Frank Murkowski was first elected this lady and I … traveled around the state for two weeks. We’ve known each other a long time. Worked together a long time.

Minute 4:12

Palin: I have great respect for the senator…. His voice, his experience, his passion needs to be heard across America. So that Alaska can contribute more. So that we can be producers. So that we can help lead the rest of the U.S. I, again, have great respect for him. There’s a big difference between reality and perception regarding our relationship.

So here’s my question: If Sarah Palin was such an all-American maverick, what was she doing palling around with a suspected felon like Ted Stevens?

Please…..go look at the records of the trial. Stevens had many distinguished senators as witnesses for the defense.

This is a ridiculous story….you can do better.

Minnesotaman | 10/28/2008, 2:40 am EST

Better “palling” around with a felon than palling around with former terrorists and terrorist sympathisers

Candy McCane | 10/28/2008, 2:46 am EST

“’The Sarah and Ted Show.’”There’s a big difference between reality and perception regarding our relationship.” Look at her mentor!
Palling around with fellow lawbreaking public officials.

Also, too, she again hasn’t progressed in her ability to speak coherently to this great nation of real Americans.

arizonagirl | 10/28/2008, 2:49 am EST

She is a disgrace to her party and to the voters. We want someone to lead us who is well-educated, curious, even-tempered, honest, someone we can look up to. Instead this is paraded in front of us as a real choice. I’m offended by McCain’s choice.

Real MinnesotaMan | 10/28/2008, 3:15 am EST

The Ayers comparison is a false one. The Stevens – Palin connection is real.

Phil | 10/28/2008, 3:29 am EST

Phil writes From South Africa:
So what if Palin and Ted are buddies.
Obama has a few ’shady’ buddies too.
Where Hussein Obama’s is his ex pastor of 20 years, the Rev Jeremy Wright who spews hat and bigotry?

Double standards here people.
You do not know the ‘real’ Obama.

You will shortly.

Thank God I live in South Africa and I wish you all the help you need.

The world is laughing at you.

Peace out!

Hmmm. I was reading last night about Sarah Palin commenting that this was an example of how corrupting “big oil” can be. That…..that would be the same big oil she wants to use to “drill baby, drill”, right?

american christain | 10/28/2008, 4:14 am EST

What a racist bighead you are Phil from South Africa. First you advocate apatheid and now you want the same in the US….go back to your volkland somewhere with terreblance and co.

american christain | 10/28/2008, 4:19 am EST

She is without a doubt the second most stupid person on planet earth and makes Paris Hilton a saint in comparasion, and a genius at that.Obvisously the most stupid person on plant earth is the idiot sitting in the whitehouse currently. The McCon/Palin is Failing ticket was entorely based on the concept of trying to mislead illiterate Americans that they were joesixpacks and hockeymums!!Ugh, what a derogatory classsification of people. that is what irked me and i was not mcconned by the mcconist campaign

John | 10/28/2008, 4:55 am EST

I agree with Carol, this is ridiculous and only shows how one sided you are.

Disgusted Alaskan | 10/28/2008, 6:30 am EST

Note if you will Palin STILL hasn’t condemned Stevens corrupt acts. Instead she attempts to take credit for “fighting” corruption. She IS corrupt, and a hypocrite of the first water. 25 years of living in Alaska gives me the right to say we deserve better!

” The verdict shines a light on the corrupting influence of the big oil service company that was allowed to control too much of our state. That control was part of the culture of corruption I was elected to fight.”

Alaska Lady | 10/28/2008, 6:36 am EST

How do you take two people who say that they care about a state and used it for their finances in the past or an endorsement for their compaign. If they can do this to their own state what do you expect for them to do for our country.

Ben | 10/28/2008, 8:30 am EST

Carol – I think you’re missing the point – if Obama is going to be taken to task for his acquaintance with Ayers, then Palin should get the same treatment for Stevens – in fact it should be even more invasive, considering how much closer they were, and how much her elected position relies on the endorsement of a convicted criminal.

fundi | 10/28/2008, 9:51 am EST

phil, firstly the world is not laughing and who cares if its laughing….this is america, im 100% sure that youre one of the stormfront members. such stuff will not be tolerated. say something about south africa or the netherlands and let americans decide for themselves. this story is really appalling

GardenerNorthernCalfornia | 10/28/2008, 10:02 am EST

Well he’s been convicted. Something Ayers never was. Give it up Republicans it’s over.

Martina | 10/28/2008, 10:39 am EST

You are seriously reaching here, and this is almost funny, and stupid to even write this article. If you want to do an article about associations try Obama, Rev Wright, and Ayers. Dig deep and give us the full story. Let us know exactly who he is, why he had 20 year relationships with domestic terroists, instead of someone who got in trouble for paving a friends road LOL. WOW ohhh, yea it was wrong, but seriously can we even come close to comparing the two?

nice job hitting the submit button multiple times while waiting for your aol to load up.

it does matter. he is a scumbag.

Katie | 10/28/2008, 11:17 am EST

Yes, this is a ridiculous story, BUT the point is, SO is Palin’s want to link Obama to Ayers, a man who won Citizen of the Year for Chicago. A man who Obama worked with on committees that existed to help make the world a better place. ONE time, 14 years ago, Ayers had a party at his house to help Obama in the beginning of his State Senate career. Maybe Obama wants to hear things from people of all walks of life in order to learn from their mistakes – learn how to prevent such things in the future. In addition, Ayers DID make some poor choices, but do you know what he was protesting? He was protesting the Vietnam war. Peaceful protests weren’t working. Ayers NEVER killed, nor tried to kill anyone. He put explosives in empty buildings and has since stated that he regrets doing that, but NOTHING was getting through to our government. Does anyone care that WE, our country, was off killing thousands of innocent people in Vietnam??? Ayers cared!!!! That’s why he was protesting in such an extreme way – doesn’t make it right and yes, he got lucky that no one was accidentally hurt (as he admits now)… He WANTED to stop the Vietman war – so did the rest of us – at least he was willing to do something – to TRY to get attention to the atrocities that were happening.

BlueState | 10/28/2008, 11:20 am EST

Let’s see she says she respects him, then goes on to say that she wants Alaska to give and not to take. She refused to publicly endorse him. What do people want from her?

To whoever compared this to Obama: I agree! Obama should have a press conference with Ayers so that we can both hear what they think of each other.

Kate | 10/28/2008, 11:29 am EST

BlueState – and anyone else out there who keeps wanting to make Obama a “terrorist pal”, please read the comment from Katie below… Ayers was Citizen of Chicago in 1997. Ayers is a distinguished professor at the University of Chicage – Are you people seriously telling me that all other professors who work with the man, all the staff who hired Ayers, all the Universities who have Ayers speak, are they all “terrorist pals” too? Maybe people could learn something from the man so we can help prevent others from doing similar violent protests. GET EDUCATED PEOPLE!!!!

Miri | 10/28/2008, 11:30 am EST

Hey Sarah, pallin’ around w/ convicted felons?

TinFoilHat | 10/28/2008, 11:37 am EST

Interesting response from the right! It was the Republicans, you might remember, who opened this Pandora’s box of ‘guilt by association’. There are a few differences with Palin however:

She remains gloriously unrepentant about her connections to Stephens, where she (both as Wasilla Mayor and as Governor) benefited handsomely from these connections. By contrast, Obama’s association with Ayers happened years after Ayers would have broken the law, and Obama has publicly condemned Ayers’ acts.

So while we’re on GBA, how ’bout the Palins’ secessionist friends in the Alaskan Independence Party? I have never heard Palin disavow any of the multiple crazy-assed statements from any of these people.

Meltdown | 10/28/2008, 12:20 pm EST

To all the people posting messages here that are up in arms over this story:

You seem to want the media to dig deeper into the perpetrated ‘relationships’ Obama has had with certain people.

Problem with that is this: If the media digs into Obama, then they better dig into McCain. You say Ayers, I say G. Gordon Liddy. You say Wright. I say Hagee. You say political corruption in Chicago, I say Keating Five. You say ‘elitist’, I say McCain’s a failure, and has been all his natural born life.

McCain: Veteran, yes. Tortured veteran, yes. But, why was he tortured? Because they caught him. 894th out of 899 in his class. Crashed 5 planes. Caught behind enemy lines. Navy cover-ups, saving his political future. Keating Five. Gordon Liddy. Absolute, complete, fundamental flip-flop on his ideology for this campaign.

You people may still support McCain, but, for once, I’d like to hear a substantial, relevant reason to continue to support him.

Sallad | 10/28/2008, 1:31 pm EST

The Republican party certainly could have done better than a McCain/Palin ticket this elections cycle. Maybe they knew they would probably lose and wanted to throw a couple of their own to the wolves…

rhonda | 10/28/2008, 2:12 pm EST

SARA’S HOUSE?
NO NEWS ABOUT IT THOUGH..
And all the money spent on her kids trips, etc..maybe Alaska needs to cracking down on this political crook too!

check out the facts | 10/28/2008, 5:10 pm EST

For all of you woman-hating Democrats bashing Palin for her association with Stevens, go check out who else was lined up to be his character witnesses: Sen Iwamay (Democrat Hawaii, Ted Kennedy (D. Mass) Sen Leahy (D Vmnt), Colin Powell (Republican endorsing Obama). So does that implicate those individuals too who you all consider the saints of your party?

Hermione Oglethorpe | 10/28/2008, 6:20 pm EST

It’s simply one more illustration of why the Republican Party is in the midst of a massive schism. “Party first”, lies, deception, denial, denial, denial. Ugh.

Frank | 10/28/2008, 9:31 pm EST

Long as we’re on about Sarah’s sordid connections, it should be noted that she received over 10% of her 2002 campaign donations from Bill Allen’s/VECO’s campaign finance laundry. Bill Allen? He was the witness who bought off and snitched off Ted Stevens!

Open-minded Independent | 10/29/2008, 12:11 am EST

From the last seven weeks since the RNC, it is clear that Sarah Palin is an opportunist plain and simple. She is such a hypocrite it is laughable! She pals around with anyone who will endorse her to get ahead. She has the audacity to take credit for corruption when she has benefited from their relationship. She has also never been a supporter of special needs children and all of a sudden she brands herself as a champion when it suits her. I am so appalled that conservatives blindly believe her… would love to see how she obtained a permit for her house and who “actually” built it. Those are just small examples of her milking the system to her benefit, among other things like charging the state for her family travel expenses, accepting gifts, etc. etc. I really hope people open their eyes and see that she is not this breath of fresh air, anti-corruption, regular folks person, because if you dig deeper she is a seasoned politician who knows how to connect with people in the most dangerous way.

Phil | 10/29/2008, 12:46 am EST

You’re from South Africa and you’re laughing at us? The joke’s on you.
