What’s the Difference Between Palin and a Hockey Mom?
An $11k-a-Week Lipstick Budget

10/24/08, 12:03 pm EST

You really can’t make this up…

Palin’s Makeup Stylist Fetches Highest Salary – NYTimes.com

Who was the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign during the first half of October as it headed down the homestretch?

Not Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser; not Nicolle Wallace, his senior communications staff member. It was Amy Strozzi, who was identified by the Washington Post this week as Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.

Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?,” was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi’s payment as “PERSONNEL SVC/EQUIPMENT.”

More proof that the Repubs are more about image than substance!

Random question: What does everybody make of the Baby Trig conspiracy theories? I think they’re kind of ridiculous, but, on the other hand, I don’t trust her AT ALL!

Who says “hockey moms” can’t shop at saks 5th ave. and other high end stores? I happen to know many wealthy “hockey moms” who shop at places like that all the time. And anyway, who cares?! If she wasn’t wearing designer clothes people would find something wrong with that!! C’mon people lets worry about the issues and not how much money she spends on herself! I don’t see any stories on how much the Democrat candidates spent on that “hollywood-like” affair they called the Democratic convention! I do, however, hear about Michelle Obama being praised on all the nice expensive clothing that she wears or the Armani suits Barrack wears! Pathetic!

Michelle and Barack Obama are admittedly wealthy and can afford to pay for their own clothing.
Someone who is claiming to be Joe Sixpack and a simple small town person is hypocritical for wearing clothing that is so expensive. You can get attractive women’s suits for less than $150 each, and she could alternate 6 or 7 suits with varied blouses and accessories and have a decent, practical wardrobe for less than $1000. And she should be able to do her own makeup at this point in her life.

INJUN1 | 10/24/2008, 2:19 pm EST

How come Obama can fly his campaign 767 to Hawaii on personal, albeit compassionate, business and let the DNC pick up the bill and the media think it isn’t worth mentioning? Bias, perhaps?

jeffery mcnary | 10/24/2008, 2:26 pm EST

gosh, she could have gone to the mid-career program at harvard’s kennedy school of government with that money, yes? she could have been somebody. she could have been a contender, huh?

teriann | 10/24/2008, 2:27 pm EST

Guess you can put lipstick on a pig and her litter with $150,000.00!

Tweety | 10/24/2008, 2:39 pm EST

Why won’t Palin reveal her medical records? IS there substance to the rumor she is not the mother of Trig?

Carolyn Ramsay | 10/24/2008, 2:46 pm EST

I have no problem with Palin or anyone wearing expensive clothes- just make sure you pay for your own clothes like everyone else. Where can I sent the bills for my next Nordstroms shopping spree- after all I have to look nice while casting my vote.

MM | 10/24/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Just goes to show how out of touch the Republicans are. I understand she’s on a national stage and needs to look nice, but spending campaign dollars to the tune of $11k a week for makeup sessions is so absurd it’s pathetic. Keep spending, Sarah, you are turning off more people daily with your “talk one way act another” behavior.

david... | 10/24/2008, 3:16 pm EST

Well, she better not clean those dirty guns of hers while she’s wearing those New York fashions.

We all know that lubricating oil isn’t easily removed from red leather !!! LOL!

Can anyone spell H Y P O C R I T E?

Terri | 10/24/2008, 3:25 pm EST

The issue is not the expense — it is the hypocritical expense – claiming to be just a regular hockey mom – one of us – while dropping six figures at high end clothing stores that most of us have never even been in, is hypocritical and highlights the great divide in this country between the haves and the have nots. If you are an elitist, say so. Don’t “betcha” and “gonna” me Sarah – we’re on to you.

Barack's flight to Hawaii | 10/24/2008, 3:25 pm EST

in the campaign jet is hugely different from the pit bull getting lipstick for one reason – the McCain campaign is public funded. Obama’s campaign is money they raised on their own, without having an easy dip into a pot of honey!

Barbara McCarty | 10/24/2008, 3:46 pm EST

I have just felt from the beginning that Gov. Palin is a hypocrite with all the winking, gotcha and betcha. She doesn’t need a makeup artist, all the expensive clothes. She just doesn’t need to claim to be just a “hockey Mom”.

Maureen - Canada | 10/24/2008, 3:56 pm EST

Palin is vain enough to think she deserves the best while the USA teeters on Recession. It shows her intelligence, eh?

Tony | 10/24/2008, 4:32 pm EST

Yes, the Obamas wear nice clothes but they don’t claim to be hockey moms or Joe six Packs. They also pay for their clothes with their own money. She’s a hypocrite.

Tesselove | 10/24/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Doesn’t matter where you shop, so long as you pay for it yourself.

How jealous dems are. | 10/24/2008, 5:51 pm EST

We all know that Sarah is the nly candidate who is not a millionaire. And she wears clothes which are bought by the campaign. She is smart and beautiful. And liberal women just hate it. So shallow they really are. And laughable. Sarah wins and liberal freak chicks lose. About time the playing field was leveled and Sarah has done it in just a few weeks. Liberalism is a mental disorder. Why would a thinking person care about some dems who are little bad sports. So shallow and so obvious. Get a life and you might make it someday.

jim auburn | 10/24/2008, 6:15 pm EST

democrats are the nicest people, to have put up with the old
re-bubba-cans, Bush should be held responsible for all the laws he has broken.
But we have been silenced for 8 years—watch us roar..

Eleanor | 10/24/2008, 6:26 pm EST

150K spending spree, 20K plus make-up artists, family trips paid for by Alaska’s tax dollars, ordering a cell site tower, etc… – no wonder the McCain/Palin ticket can’t stick to the issues! They’re too busy spending money on themselves – Rich people!!!

The McCain/Palin’s “do anything, say anything” politics is catching up with… and passing them by…

What was McCain thinking!!!!

Rochelle | 10/24/2008, 6:35 pm EST

What is the big deal. They are spending some money on her wardrobe, clothes that will be donated to charity. Look how much Obama is spending on advertising, after lying and saying that he would only take govt. funds for advertising. Maybe Obama’s campaign should hire a stylist for Michelle and maybe they could help her to look better. She could use a little help with that horse face and big teeth. Jealousy is a ugly thing. Sarah Palin is a beautiful, intelligent woman and liberals are intimadated by her so they do all they can to trash her character.

European Designers for Foreign | 10/24/2008, 6:48 pm EST

European designers are the quickest way to foreign policy experience other than looking out your window in Alaska.

Trong Phan | 10/24/2008, 6:49 pm EST

While, American lost their house, jobs; and the country is in the recession. McCain and Palin are not have any feeling the american pain. They just spent 150K for clothes which are the public money. That ARE the abuse and crooked. I do not them any more.

gao xia en | 10/24/2008, 7:25 pm EST

Tax. Payer. Dollars.

Flo Ed | 10/24/2008, 7:35 pm EST

I think Mrs. Palin, doesn’t have the time to be president. She needs to be at available for those kids of hers, especially, the one that needs so much love and someone to bond to. Or did she forget her choices.

pathetic! | 10/24/2008, 7:40 pm EST

this left wing media is driving me comletely nuts! frankly, i am sick of hearing all of the palin bashing!

worry about the issues!!! | 10/24/2008, 7:44 pm EST

To the person who wrote about palin not having time for her kids if elected…what is the difference between a man or woman in that position? there are plenty of working mothers in this country whos children are well taken care of! i personally think, if she is elected to be our VICE president, her kids will be taken care of just fine! what about obamas kids?!

Word | 10/24/2008, 8:01 pm EST

Sick and tired of the Palin bashing? Please. This is the accidental behind -the-curtain peak at the republican party itself: it is the sight of the rich trying to get richer at the expense of the rest of the country.

Palin is an upper class elitist. Someone who puts on the act of an average American in order to gain votes. She’s so fake she needs to spend that much to make herself seem real. That some people believe her act speaks volumes about their IQ.

Don’t you think there’s a reason they’re spending so much to paint lipstick on a pig? Could it be that Sarah Palin is actually hideous in person and her sexy image is just the work of a hollywood makeup artist?

The Republican Party truly has no shame.

smileygirl141 | 10/24/2008, 8:02 pm EST

Sara Palin , Is a fake.McCain and Palin had had a very bad attitude. And i don’t thimk we should be paying for her clothes and etc.Clothes do not nake a personI cant wait for this election to get over.Won’t half to listen to McCaim and Palin Bashing. And she call herself a kockey mom. I don’t think so !!!!!!!

Derek | 10/24/2008, 9:01 pm EST

Assuming the Secret Service would be okay with Obama flying coach to Hawaii, the bill for the extra security and disruption would easily rival Palin’s makeup budget.

Don Nelson | 10/24/2008, 11:52 pm EST

She has to look pretty on the outside because she’s so ugly on the inside. To all those sick of Democrats bashing Palin…Boo hoo Hilary Clinton has dealt with it for 16 years from Repugs.

Richard Moss | 10/25/2008, 12:09 am EST

Personally I believe Gov. Sarah Palin may have maid a good VP , so long as she did not have to open her mouth . Once that happened everybody knew she is just “SMOKE AND MIRRORS” . Hockey moms and (I hate this analogy it makes all of us regular folks out to be ALCOHOLICS) Joe 6 packs do not have 150K wardrobes that they can give to charities , if they choose to . I believe the only reason she is such a popular Gov. (that knowbody has heard of outside of Alaska) is because she is the first woman to be positioned for the VP job . Other than that she would be just another USA state Governor that the majority of us would never hear about , unless she did something really stupid (troopergate). Go figure .

boring | 10/25/2008, 12:50 am EST

The RNC can spend money on whatever they feel they need to to win this election. In this endlessly televised and highly influential contest, you don’t send your candidate out looking like she rolled out of bed and slept on her face. Contrary to what people have posted on this board, this is not taxpayer money. It’s RNC money. It’s money they could spend on mudslinging or photoshop forgery or lipstick.

Think about the makeup and wardrobe budget of a 1 to 2 hour feature film. Now imagine a 24 hour a day, 3-5 month campaign where every edge counts. This is not a big deal but poor people will whine and complain that this is a waste of money. Well, what do you suggest, that we spend it on YOU? Stop whining and try to make something of yourself.

Vladislaw | 10/25/2008, 5:13 am EST

when michele obama was on the view they talked about her dress, $150 off the rack.

Obama already showed that he bought 5 suits at the start of the campaign and paid 585.oo per suit.

hardly armani

McCain wears 1500 dollar suits, that was already reported also.

logical steve | 10/25/2008, 5:30 am EST

All the jabs at Palin, you should be ashamed. Yes I know she is a air-head repub, but, she will serve a valuable purpose for Mcshame if he does(god forbid) get elected. She would be liken to Dan Quayle and hold the same position. You remember, Insurance Policy for the President. Confused? Nobody would be stupid enough to attempt knocking off Mccain knowing she would get in office. Great thinking John, your the man!

JERRY | 10/25/2008, 6:28 am EST

What else is new? This woman and the RNC IS SHOWING THE WHOLE WORLD what they are abouy. Hypocrits galore. Heaven help us should these jerks McCain/Palin somehow win this thing.

Nothing can't help that woman | 10/25/2008, 10:24 am EST

Poor Sarah. I don’t care how much those Republican spend on her, it cannot change her pure ignorance…. As to Obama’s trip…good for him. Best wishes for him and his Grandma… God Bless this Country and the right (some may considered leftbound) direction that Obama will take us.

robert | 10/25/2008, 11:50 am EST

Keep it coming New York Times, thank god the media is working during this campaign cycle!

McCain made a huge mistake by choosing Palin!

Cheri Beeler | 10/25/2008, 2:19 pm EST

There’s seems to be a total disconnect between the Republican ticket and the real America. I realize that as a vice-presidential candidate needs to look “good” on TV, at rallies, etc., but I don’t see the need for a $150,000 wardrobe and a more than $5,000 a week make up person, particularly when the nation (or maybe world) is at the worst economic time in history. It’s also ironic that Sarah Palin makes these absurd choices then claims to be a “regular” hockey mom when she is clearly not. The money should have been spent on a tutor so she would have known that one couldn’t see Russia from Wasilla or Juneau.

Anonymous | 10/25/2008, 5:25 pm EST

Jed Clampett

remember when I came back from Mexico in early August and told you how you would be seeing all the Freudian slips and incongruent statements, the deceit and ugliness. But back then, I was just talking out of my Arse, a democratic shill spewing hate for a war hero, yada yada yada. You loose, can you loose gracefuly or will you be sore loosers and destroy ikt for all?

Peace

Nikki | 10/25/2008, 11:13 pm EST

They say clothing bought by the campaign to manufacture the *regular hockey mom* image will be donated to charity post election so as to avoid being taxed on it. Soooo…how about the 11k a week worth of makeup? Does Sarah scrape it off at night and stow it all in a jar for donation to charity?

Dave | 10/26/2008, 7:38 am EST

The saddest part is that many people think Obama is any different (with his $1500 suits). They are all bought and paid for. I used to think they were shills of the elite. I was wrong. ALL members of congress and the Whitehouse ARE THE new ruling elite.

kjseattle | 10/26/2008, 7:59 am EST

It’s like Ron White says, you can put on make-up, dress her up, fill the flaws, nip and tuck,—but you can’t fix stupid!

ronald patterson | 10/26/2008, 8:54 am EST

The Ruplican party is dead. If this halfwit is the best they can come up with for a v.P. candiadate. The expensive clothes the make-up were to attract those who think Brittany Spears is a great artist. Also that is what the Republicans think that women really care about; fashion. Palin is a small town bigot with a hick’s world view. SAD

bill morrison | 10/26/2008, 8:54 am EST

well seems like a smart hair dresser to me. you go girl, make it while you can. after all it takes a lot to make palin look good.

GeorgeBarkes | 10/26/2008, 11:21 am EST

McCain whines about how much Obama’s spending on his campaign but he’s spent taxpayer money on his slsleazy slanderous campaign.
I’m offended that it is being wasted on him.
Obama raised his own from volunteer contributions.

Anonymous | 10/26/2008, 12:05 pm EST

Jed Clampett

Actually, McCain did not receive any public funds. Even though he had signed the paperwork and was set to only receive public funding for the presidential campaign, since Sen Obama had not signed the paperwork to do the same and chose not to receive public funding, McCain did what this maverick always does, he broke the rules. Since there was not a quorum in the regulating body that oversees these matters, he was able to not be sanctioned and his candidacy annulled as it should have been. That invisible hand helping him again. Eventually, that invisible hand shows it is attached to a crystal skull and doesn’t belong in our world at all.

How about tha professor Henry Jones Jr. A? I wonder where they got the idea for that ending.

Peace

PartyCrasher | 10/26/2008, 2:47 pm EST

To Ronald Patterson

And you are a Big Town Biggot with a Snobs view of the world.
John Mellemcamp’s song”Small Town” speaks of the virtues of small town values and peoples. JM is not a McCain/Palin supporter,by no means.
Prejudice is an equal opportunity employeer with no geographical limitations. As you so well demonstrate. BIGGOT.

PartyCrasher | 10/26/2008, 3:29 pm EST

To all you snivelling whiney libs.
It’s amazing. This one blog about Palins wardrobe and makeup received over 50 comments. You libs are pathetic envious petty little creatures. Of all the important issues there are , this is what’s important to you. You guys can’t wait for Obama to get elected, so you can be the first in line with your greedy little hands out for your share of other peoples money.
I hope they spend another $250000 on her wardrobe. So you morons can start foaming from your mouths.
LOOSERS.

PartyCrasher | 10/26/2008, 3:39 pm EST

“Nothing can’t help that woman”

Before you call someone ignorant, please learn proper English.
Your double negatives are killing me!

Dubya | 10/26/2008, 8:11 pm EST

If you’re going to criticize people’s grammar then maybe you should learn the difference between “looser” and loser, huh?

Schmuck.

Coach | 10/26/2008, 8:23 pm EST

Party: So Patterson is a bigot because he pointed out that Palin is a bigot? Huh?

Palin is the one who sincerely believes in NOT allowing same-sex the same kind of rights as ‘normal’……..and, somehow, Patterson is the bigot? And the libs are the ones foaming at the mouth.

Make sure you wipe your mouth next time you toss those dimly lit matches attempting to start a fire……

partycrasher | 10/28/2008, 8:13 am EST

R Paterson,
I didn’t

partycrasher | 10/28/2008, 8:24 am EST

Dubya,

I wasn’t making fun of her grammar for the the sake of it. It was in response to his/her comment about Palin: ” she’s pure ignorance “.
My typo aside, it’s comparing apples to oranges.

Smok (Head)

It’s Yiddish for………

Look it up schmuck.

partycrasher | 10/28/2008, 9:02 am EST

Coach,

R Patteron is a bigot because he stereotyped all people from small towns as bigots and rednecks.
If he wanted to make that charge against Palin (which is absurd, in my opinion), he could have just said bigot instead of small town bigot.
And what is the difference between a small and big town bigot anyway?
Coach why waste your time defending a..holes?

partycrasher | 10/28/2008, 9:42 am EST

Dubya,

That was Shmok (Head).

Sorry, Schmuck.

partycrasher | 10/28/2008, 9:50 am EST

Sorry Dubya,

That’s Shmok’

haha | 10/30/2008, 7:55 pm EST

let’s talk about “spreading the wealth”….does that somewhere fit into the $5 million Obama spent last night on t.v.?!!! haha!! and that right there proves how biased or media really is and how stupid people are for listening to it! $150K that will be going to charity does not even compare to that!
