I didn’t see the Smith Dinner, I don’t watch ’stuff,’ but by all accounts, it was better viewing than the debates. The AP account portrayed Johnny Boy quite well. This, a social gathering, is obviously his milleu. Let’s hope he’s able to rake in a lot of dough in the coming years, speaking on the circuit.

TinFoilHat | 10/18/2008, 11:52 am EST

DD,
Its available streamed online. Definitely more entertaining than the debates.

MSNBC just ran both their speeches, will do so again at 1700 ET. Missed the McCain one though I did hear some of it, will catch it later. Sen Obama’s was quite interesting. I even like the guys sense of humor. Even though tossing some sharp jabs, but well delivered without meanness.

It can be found on C-span and other outlets.

Quite telling was the fact they sat flanking a religious figure. Cardinal perhaps?

For all who are interested in the truth about our “war on terror”, the previously censored oscar-winning documentary “Taxi to the Dark Side” is scheduled to finally air on HBO on October 20. I, personally, will look forward to finally seeing it.

DirtyDennis | 10/18/2008, 7:07 pm EST

Jeez, you gotta take a cab to get to the dark side now. In mine ‘n Luke’s day, you just let yourself go.

I remember the Pale Swan in Juarez. Now THAT was the dark side.

What’s that? Really?

Never mind.

TinFoilHat | 10/19/2008, 12:31 pm EST

DD,
I guess that depends on how far over you wish to go. In the case of US detainee procedures, I’d say it was a rocket powered cab.

TinFoilHat | 10/19/2008, 2:21 pm EST

DD, I confess I have no idea what you are talking about.

Earthlinking | 10/19/2008, 6:38 pm EST

Three certainties

LA Times is a liberal organization

The sun rises in the East

HBO is not where people go for realities about war, it is called entertainment for a reason.

DirtyDennis | 10/19/2008, 7:29 pm EST

Who owns the LA Times?

HBO ‘bought’ the film, they didn’t produce it. They’re a business; they think it will help their ratings, they’ll air it. If it’s controversial, more the better.

Finally, I think you could even describe their programming as ‘in your face.’ They ‘honor’ thugs and thieves and win praise.

I have NO love/admiration for HBO, but I don’t think you can write off this film because THEY are showing it.

Meltdown | 10/19/2008, 8:03 pm EST

Earthlinking: “LA Times is a liberal organization”

Versus what? A conservative organization that, by definition, conserves information and truths? Isn’t that called fascism?

Listen very carefully. In order to be ‘fair and balanced’, you HAVE to be liberal. You can’t withold information and facts from the public. This whole ‘liberal media’ legend has got to be stopped. ALL MEDIA, if ethically sound, is liberal. They HAVE to be. That’s the thing about Fox, they perpetrate lies and innuendo, and withold sharing fundamental facts.

TinFoilHat | 10/19/2008, 11:33 pm EST

The LA times used to be a liberal organization (thus the accounting for the 37 pulitzers). As Cobert said “reality has a well-known liberal bias”. In 2000 it was bought out by the Tribune (of chicago fame). They’ve cut back significantly since then and it may not be right wing, but it is no longer too great either.

6 string galliath | 10/20/2008, 1:34 am EST

Meltdown, what is the very definition of well and balanced? Don’t get me wrong FOX is defenatly not, but at least they try. Fair and balnced to me is getting your news from conervative and liberal sources.

Meltdown | 10/20/2008, 11:39 am EST

Guitarman: So, by including ‘fair and balanced Fox’, you DO realize that you’re okaying the perpetration of lies and innuendo, all in the name of being fair??

Fox news’ premise and theme rivals that of the National Enquirer. You can have it. I don’t want any part of it. I realize it’s there to prey on white people’s hidden emotions of race and gender. The owner, himself, has actually admitted that.

TinFoilHat | 10/20/2008, 1:06 pm EST

Fox News has gone to court and fought for their ‘right’ to air untrue stories.

youtube.com/watch? v=JL1pKlnhvg0

I think you are missing the elephant in the room here. Media in America are owned by c0rporate entities which pr0fit greatly from deregulation and get their m0ney from other large corporations through the advertising.

If you want the ‘right-wing’ slant on news, you can get that from the major media sources (CBS, NBC, CNN, NYT, NPR, etc..). If you want the ‘left-wing’ slant, your choices are more limited and mostly independent (not beholden to commercial interests). These include such sources as DemocracyNow, CommonDreams, and Huffington.

I would recommend to anyone who wants to make their media diet more ‘balanced’, to add BBC, AlJazera, and other ‘foreign’ sources who are not effectively controlled by American interests. Forget Fox News, they have admitted that they have no loyalty to the truth.

If you have DirecTV, I suggest you also catch some of those programs on Link TV and Current. They tend to be left leaning, but then again, so it truth.

TinFoilHat | 10/21/2008, 2:32 am EST

Dennis,
I saw that movie tonight. It was amazingly well done, and incredibly depressing. After watching it, any vestige of an idea that I might have had that the ‘war on terror’ is a good idea (admittedly slim) has now been crushed by stark reality. Gibney interviews the interrogators, the MPs, and a whole host of Government legal and intelligence whistle-blowers. Even though I was aware of most of these details, taken all together they paint a new and damning picture of this administration. President Obama should make it a priority to fulfill the triple judgement of the Supreme Court and denounce this atrocious officially sanctioned behaviour.

DirtyDennis | 10/21/2008, 8:47 am EST

Beanie,

(Sorry, I really like the Aluminum Beanie conjured by coach. As a tot, I was enamoured with a TV show in L.A. called “Cecil and Beanie.” Cecil the seasick sea serpent. Phew, that was tough for a tot.)

I take your word for it. As you said, we have heard of all the bits and pieces, now they are coming together into a grizzly condemnation.

I don’t think you go far enough. Condemning and apologizing isn’t enough. Accountability both to the perpetrators AND the victims.

Hey, I really liked that show too (Beany and Cecil), had some cool lessons to teach. Something missing in today’s television for kids unfortunately. Funny thing, one of the writers was Bob Clampett. Coincidence, I think not.

There was a law passed a while back that said Saturday morning kids television had to have a certain amount of educational value. They put in loopholes however that said that if the setting was a school it was considered educational; so we got ‘head of the class’ which only teaches bad behavior, instead of shows like Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures. Beakman’s World is somewhat ridiculous, but at least it tries to teach something… though it treats kids as if they are retards that need distracting rather than educating.

Peace

DirtyDennis | 10/21/2008, 6:36 pm EST

I left L.A. in 1950 and sure don’t think I ever saw the show anywhere else, so, you’re either a LOT older than I thought (I don’t think so) or the show carries on.

Okay, howabout Crusader Rabbit?

TinFoilHat | 10/21/2008, 8:53 pm EST

I’m a Bullwinkle guy myself.

TinFoilHat | 10/21/2008, 11:43 pm EST

OMG!
I just saw the Cobert Report. Sarah Palin SHOT BULLWINKLE! AHHHH!

Oh damn that was funny. TFH, you linked into the matrix too, getting some of that special help? :D

Quetzalcoatl rules!!

You should have seen Weekend Update from last weekend’s SNL.

All the mavericks in the house raise your hands up,
All the mavericks in the house raise your hands up…
I shoot a mother fu@king moose every day of the week.

TinFoilHat | 10/22/2008, 6:08 pm EST

I almost died when I watched that segment! I don’t know about any ’special help’. If so, do you think they could help me get a good job?

I started learning how to play and sing “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” this morning. Hey if all else fails I can go sing on street corners. A little rough living and I might even sound like Tom Waits!

Nothing like being really poor for a while to make you realize how the world is so screwed up and the things you need to do to survive in it. :D

Don’t get trapped into a job, find what you WANT to do, the thing you wish to enjoy, and go do it and train for it.
I’m about to close shop for a while, people aren’t going to be spending on things that aren’t necessary, and play with what I have saved of personal cash to play with some ideas for generating cheap electricity off the grid.
And hopefully, if Obama is elected, be able to get grants to develop it fully.

DD has alluded to you being an engineer of some sort… which?

Damn, have you seen the ads for ‘Resistance 2′? Talk about a premonition of what can happen if we don’t pay attention.

Peace

TinFoilHat | 10/23/2008, 7:47 am EST

Jed,
I would prefer we take that type of thing offline. DD has my email address if you want to get in touch. This forum should not be about us, and I hate to give the snipers ammunition to take the discussion off-subject.

Agreed, will do so ASAP
