A Quick Clarification for Andrew Sullivan Readers

10/8/08, 11:13 am EST

For Andrew Sullivan readers, a couple of quick clarifications about former POW and retired Col. John Dramesi:

He did write a memoir of his POW experience (reviewed here).

And he did make an unsuccessful run for Congress (as a Republican in New Jersey in 1982 — the same year John McCain came to the House) in part based on his POW experience.

So on these measures at least, the contrast between Dramesi and McCain is not as black and white as Sullivan suggests.

You continue to attack McCain’s POW days. I’d be money you never served in the armed forces, and even more money that you were never a POW. So, with that being said how about you get on a plane, grab a gun, go to Iraq, get captured, and I’m sure you will still have your same B.S point of view on McCain being a former POW. If that doesn’t work join those Westboro people I’m sure you’d fit right in.

err, Jon, he’s not attacking his POW days, he’s questioning his integrity in service to his country, his judgment that exhibits alot of recklessness and his achievements that seems to be clouded over by help from his family name and cronies. In other words, his service, not his imprisonment.

How does being a POW qualify McCain as able to be president? Shouldn’t it actually exclude him since there is the possibility that he was subjected to psychological restructuring and a possible ‘manchurian candidate’ type of programming? Remeber that the Russians were main ‘advisers’ to the Vietnamese and they, as the CIA did, experimented with hypnosys and other techniques; wouldn’t be too far fetched that they would have implanted instructions into the brain of the son and grandson of admirals who may someday make it to high office by virtue of his family and wealthy friends.
Just a thought.

Peace

uh Jon,
As far as I know, the Iraqi insurgents don’t do POWs. Tim would merely be beheaded.
