Charles Krauthammer: Obama in the Footsteps of Reagan

10/3/08, 8:40 pm EST

Charles Krauthammer – Hail Mary vs. Cool Barry:

Obama… understands that this election, like the election of 1980, demands only one thing of the challenger: Make yourself acceptable. Once Ronald Reagan convinced America that he was not menacing, he won in a landslide. If Obama convinces the electorate that he is not too exotic or green or unprepared, he wins as well.

To hear several hard core Republicans begin to believe in Obama, is almost breathtakingly..amazing.

A Guardian(UK) poll asked Brits who won the debate:

83% of Brits gave it to Biden.

This time, when Obama picks up the phone at 3:00am to ask an ally for help,in Iran, or Afghanistan, we just may get a “yes”, for a change.

Because that’s really what it should be all about.

Reagan set this country on the path of destruction we now find ourselves barreling down. Comparing Obama to Reagan is an insult to Obama.

Jed Clampett

Reagan was little more than a puppett of the special interests. A good indication of what his tenure would be like should have been his actions towards the solar panels that were installed in the white house. Even though they helped reduce the electric consumption of grid electricity, it was considered a bad thing by Reagan, so he dismantled them, just like he did the programs Carter had set up to reduce our dependence on oil by improving efficiency and bringing online other forms of energy generation. Reagan proceeded to dismantle any program or government law that he disagreed with, preservation of natural resources was another, as well as oversight and regulation of financial markets. Reagan also gave free reign to his friends in the Military Industrial Complex, which saw a boon to production and a couple of wars to s.ell their warez in. Though I voted for the guy, one must recognize that BD is right and Reagan actually did more to set the country back a couple of decades rather than advance the development of things that interest and benefit the public.

Peace

SENATOR OBAMA,WHY DO POORER AMERICANS NEED GOD TO LOBBY OUR US CONGRESS ???

SURELY OUR US CONGRESS & US SUPREME COURT BOTH KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATE MURDER & A POSSIBLE EXECUTION IN GEORGIA NEXT WEEK ???

OUR US CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD CONTINUE TO DENY MIDDLE CLASS AND WORKING POOR AMERICANS PROPER LEGAL REPRESENTATION EVEN THOUGH WRONGFUL EXECUTIONS & FALSE INCARCERATIONS CONTINUE ALL ACROSS AMERICA ???

*** 700 BILLION $$$ AVAILABLE FOR US BAILOUT, & NO $$$ FOR ALL POORER AMERICANS PROPER LEGAL REPRESENTATION ???????

WHERE ARE AMERICA ‘S RELIGIOUS LEADERS ??
SENATOR OBAMA, THIS JUDICIAL INJUSTICE HAS BECOME AN AMERICAN ART FORM, AND NO LONGER CAN BE KEPT HIDDEN OR SECRET FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE EVEN IF CERTAIN (501c3) U$ RELIGIOU$ LEADER$ HAVE BEEN $ILENCED ??

LETS ALL HOPE OUR MEDIA FRIENDS CONTINUE TO SHOW AN INTEREST IN REPORTING ON THIS AMERICAN HORROR FACING THESE (TENS OF THOUSANDS) FORGOTTEN AND TRAPPED POORER AMERICANS, AND HOW THIS PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER HANDLES THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE FACING AMERICA’S LATINO AND BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITIES ????

WITH 80% OF THE BLACK AMERICAN VOTERS SAYING THEY SUPPORT SENATOR OBAMA IN THIS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, IT IS ONLY FAIR FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW PRIOR BEING ELECTED OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HOW THIS DEMOCRATIC SENATOR TRULY FEELS ABOUT THIS AMERICAN JUDICIAL INJUSTICE CONTINUING TO INFLICT GRAVE HARM ON THE BLACK & LATINO AMERICAN FAMILIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE ??????

*** WHEN GOD’S FACE BECAME VERY RED ***
THE US SUPREME COURT GAVE ENEMY COMBATANTS FEDERAL APPEAL HC RIGHTS LAWYERS AND PROPER ACCESS TO US FEDERAL COURTS,AND POORER AMERICANS (MANY EVEN ON DEATH ROW) ARE DENIED PROPER FEDERAL APPEAL LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO OUR US FEDERAL COURTS OF APPEAL, AND ROTTING IN AMERICAN PRISONS NATIONWIDE ?????????

**** INNOCENT AMERICANS ARE DENIED REAL HC RIGHTS WITH THEIR FEDERAL APPEALS !
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE $LOWLY FINDING OUT HOW EA$Y IT I$ FOR MIDDLE CLA$$ AND WORKING POOR AMERICAN$ TO FALL VICTIM TO OUR U$ MONETARY JUDICIAL $Y$TEM.

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.

Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus with our US FEDERAL COURTS and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.

This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!

madmilker | 10/4/2008, 11:04 pm EST

now….lets see! back in 1995 Obama wus at Bill Ayers’s home to launch tat first run for the Illinois State Senate. Why is it tat this magazine can’t get him to talk about tat executive experience….from 1995 to 1999, when he wus a leader of tat education front…oops! foundation call the Chicago Annenberg Challenge… (CAC) for short and he set on tat board until 2001 or so! Tat group poured more than $100 million into the hands of community organizers and radical education activists. This magazine ever question him bout tat Harvard experience or how he got there….duh! It would be nice to have a Knight in shinnin’ armor to set D. C. straight but it be the horse tat the person rides tat is of rainbow colors not the person. You media people can point, slant, impregnate and piker the articles and people as you see fit and if this post is deleted from view it only makes the media tat more of a hypocrite. Everyone needs to get off tat high horse and put America first. O’ Glory is down on one knee and its gonna take more than a Messiah to get her to stand straight. Made in America would be a good start.

OH NO! Not a network of local school boards funded to allow better control of the school system by parents! Surely a threat to democracy!

five words …

PLEEASE! Give me a break!

DirtyDennis | 10/5/2008, 8:19 am EST

Tinman,

MadMan is right about one thing, America IS down on one knee. And why is that? Bushney inherits the biggest surplus ever and turns it into the biggest deficit ever AND he does that while orchestrating the greatest military boondoggle EVER as well as the greatest financial disaster EVER as well as spying on the American people, ironic given that he’s simultaneously ignoring them in their plight.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but perhaps we SHOULD amend the Constitution to strike the ‘born in America’ restriction. (Although, last I heard, HI IS part of the U.S. Maybe MadMan means that PARENTS of Prez candidates must be born in U.S.)

Jefferson said the tree of liberty needs to be, from time to time, refreshed with the blood of patriots, or some such thing. Perhaps he was misquoted and actually said the tree of liberty needs to be refreshed by the seed of immigrants. They probably appreciate what the DOI and USCon say more than most ‘natives.’

worldlymom.. nice.. isn’t that what it’s about.. all i hear is mccain and his foreign policy.. yeah.. that is a laugh.. no country would deal with that man.. especially if he wont deal with them first.. they might deal with palin.. she is not intimidating at all.. could you imagine? obama is a man that could win respect around the world.. and dont give me any s**t you republicans.. you know that is the truth.. or dont you keep up on the news at all? (im not talking about fox news either).. One thing is for sure.. america needs help from the world, just as the world needs help from america.. dont close the door

Obama was born in Hawaii. McCain was born in Panama. Who was not born in the US?

madmilker | 10/5/2008, 12:21 pm EST

“DirtyDennis”….think you need to spend a month or two on Michael Hodges “Grandfather Economic Report” series site and learn the truth of D. C. starting with his Government Trust Fund and Deficit surplus Report. You people jus don’t get it cause all you think about is a jacka!! or elephant. Character is where its at and in my opinion I wouldn’t give either the time of day. Obama being at Bill Ayers’s home in 1995 to kick off his bid to run for the Illinois State Senate and the self-centered “I’m a POW” crap should tell the world tat. You know what they say about a mule when it comes to work….they turn their a!! to it….and with tat elephant it’s all about not forgettin….Bush Sr and Bush Jr contest to tat. gudday!

Bullship | 10/5/2008, 12:23 pm EST

Our election campaign format has got to have the rest of the world laughing histericaly at us. The majority of people don’t vote on the issues or pay attention to historical voting backgrounds of the candidates. The majority are more interested in turning it into a “Jerry Springer Show” , we have the world thinking we are looking for CHANGE…..defined as….a Hockey Mom..Moose Hunter..Maverick..someone that smiles and winks at the camera…or can go to a debate and lie or forget the facts with the best style…or accuse the opponent of the most BS..We dont take in consideration our right to choose..we let the GOP change the rules to allow the Supreme Court to decide the winner…allow the GOP to subcontract out new cumputorized tamperable voting machines for easy vote fixing..and on and on. We are a discrace to the democracy and liberties we represent.

Funky Music Playin' White Boy | 10/5/2008, 12:55 pm EST

Madman has drank the kool-aid that Palin has been spewing. Palin was referring to a piece in The New York Times about Obama’s relationship with Ayers, now 63. But that article concluded that “the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called ’somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.’”

Several other publications, including the Washington Post, Time magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic, have debunked the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship.

TinFoilHat | 10/5/2008, 1:41 pm EST

Funky,
Yup. The Repugs are saying that they want to change the subject and make it about Obama. I guess they don’t like all this Economy talk (can you blame them?) As usual, the right will try to direct our attention away from any issue that actually matters because they know they will LOOSE on the issues. Disgraceful conduct from a campaign that claims to be taking the “high road”.

Funky Music Playin' White Boy | 10/5/2008, 2:17 pm EST

Hat,
Those in the media keep saying that Americans are not going to fall for this swiftboat type of politics this time. I hope they are right. But it’s obvious that those who are easily manipulated are a dime-a-dozen and too stupid to realize that they are voting against their own best interests. So I’m not as confident in the American people as the media appear to be. I sure hope I’m wrong.

The fact that the McCain campaign admits that they are going to attack Obama and not discuss the issues, should be a wake-up call to all Americans.

DirtyDennis | 10/5/2008, 3:24 pm EST

Madman,

Tnx for pointing out the source of your inspiration. Mr. Michael Hodges is to be commended for his efforts to define and explain the many ‘problems’ facing this country.

I confess, I’m not sure of his intent and I detect a decidedly anti-Left bias in his presentation. Yes, the national debt IS enormous, and bad, and why IS it so high? Could it be waging war in the Middle east? Youthink? I didn’t see the Middl east ‘war’ as being mentioned as a bad ‘trend’ by Mr. Hodges.

Another ‘red flag’ indicating Mr. Hodges’ bias is his lamentation of “Big Government,” a classic straw man for the Right. He points out that government spending is growing four times as fast as the economy. But he doesn’t say why. I wonder, does the expense of waging war in the Middle east ‘count’ as government spending? Youthink?

Mr. Hodges also alludes to the ‘free market society,’ that being his ideal of what this country SHOULD be. Well, if he got upset over government spending BEFORE this past week, well, I guess he should be apoplectic now that, uh-oh, the big spending U.S. Government has just undertaken to ‘save’ that ‘free market society’ Mr. Hodges SO admires.

I especially like how Mr. Hodges points to Article II, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution to indicate how the founding fathers ‘meant’ the government to behave. He seems to overlook the ‘general welfare’ clause within that section, meant, we can only hope, that the U.S. Constitution empowered Congress with the ability and power to grow with the changing times. Mr. Hodges might be old, he’s reputed to be a grandfather, which really means nada, but I’m pretty sure he’s not advocating this country return to an 18th Century life. Youthink?

I doubt the founding fathers, wise as they were, envisioned robber barons, cornering the gold market, insider trading, hedge funds, oil futures, planes flying into tall buildings, pan-global epidemics and You Tube. So, they put in the ‘general welfare’ clause. But Mr. Hodges’, wise beyond his years, believes the general welfare is what HE deems it to be.

Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Hodges is absolutely right in what he ‘fingers’ as problems confronting future generations and I, for one, believe resolving them should be our utmost priority. I’m just not so sure I want Mr. Hodges, or those of his ilk, being the ones suggesting how we change things. He is, after all, the reason we’re in the mess we’re in. Youthink?

DirtyDennis | 10/5/2008, 4:29 pm EST

Madman,

Mr. Hodges uses spending as a gauge for determining the ’size’ of government, not the number of people and/or programs managed.

How much gasoline do you think the government uses each year? Probably a lot. And how much has gasoline gone UP since the party of the Right took over the reigns of ALL branches of government? (Coach?)

Like I said, Mr. Hodges doesn’t point any fingers nor does he make any suggestions on how to improve things. Might I? Round up all the Right and ship them back to the 18th Century. I can get you a good hammock, away from the Sun.

madmilker | 10/5/2008, 9:03 pm EST

“DirtyDennis” guess you didn’t get to the page..
“A Summary of Mega-trends-along a road to serfdom ?” on tat site. And to tat”Funky Music Playin’ White Boy” it ain’t the kool-aid and being of the age like Ayers maybe I set on a board back in 2000. There ain’t but one “madmilker” but could be many “madmen” DD, I ain’t one of them.

Jed Clampett

I love it when they use the ‘drink the koolaid’ reference without even knowing what it refers to.

I believe it was the late 70’s early 80’s when Jim Jones had his commune type living system in the states. He convinced his flock, much like David Koresh, to give him their money to manage and move to Guyana, where they could avoid America’s tax code and restrictive laws and the money would last longer. There were rumors, much like in Koresh’s commune, that rape, kidnapping, incest, sex with minors, etc. was going on there. Some senators went to investigate and wound up being shot… guess they found out more than they wanted to… or simply wanted more ‘contributions’ than Jones and company wanted to donate.
Subsequently, in order to escape the certain legal quandry about to befall him and to deny any satisfaction of freeing some people to the senators, he convinced his people, and forced others, into drinking a cyanide laced Koolaid that killed most of the folks living in their arrangement.
What is funny to me, is that Repuglicans use it to describe Democrats as out of touch with reality, as if they drank some mushroom tea(koolaid) or something of that sort… When in reality, it is them being misled, via religion, fear, appeal to a false sense of superiority, bigotry, etc, into electing a group of old white men that keep doing things to destroy their nation, economy, educational system, healthcare system, servicemen,… in others words, misleading them to their doom. I guess there truly are no IQ requirements to be a GOP supporter, but it probably has to be below a certain level and must preclude the ability to think independently… the ability to be a maverick, so to speak.
Maverick :D
that is so funny, the guy is like a flag. You can tell which way the political winds are blowing by the position he takes on an issue. One thing is for sure, like his statement about ‘the fundamentals of our economy are strong’ when the entire house of cards was crumbling, he won’t be honest about what is really happening, and he won’t really know what the hell is going on but he’ll act and try to convince you that he does. Much like the current chimp in chief… wow, come to think of it, they are more alike than I wanted to realize. McCain = Bush = McSame

Peace

DirtyDennis | 10/8/2008, 6:54 pm EST

Jed,

After you posted, I felt compelled to ‘revisit’ that whole episode. It was otherworldly. I’d forgotten the name of the Congressman, Leo Ryan, and his assistant, Jackie Spierer who went on to be someone in CA gov’t as well.

Strange doings. And Jones was not some wacko, ostensibly. He was pretty well connected. He certainly WAS wacko at the end. Almost Hitleresque.

Anyway, you’re right about the whole ‘kool-aid’ reference. It should refer to someone who knowingly posions themself, although a case could be made that many didn’t REALLY believe it was poison.

I think kool-aid’s getting a bad rap in all this.

TinFoilHat | 10/8/2008, 7:25 pm EST

There was something really weird about that whole thing. CONSPIRACY ALERT!

DirtyDennis | 10/9/2008, 3:07 am EST

Tinman,

You don’t have to be paranoid to see a LOT of instances where an ‘evil hand’ can be detected.

Do you?

Am I?

TinFoilHat | 10/9/2008, 11:45 am EST

Dennis,
LOL! Just because we’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get us.
