Are You Fucking Kidding Me?!???!

9/25/08, 2:59 am EST

We just wanted to choose a really large number.

– A Treasury spokesman explaining to Forbes that the $700,000,000,000 the administration is asking for is “not based on any particular data point.”

I couldn’t agree more.

charrington | 9/25/2008, 5:25 am EST

hahaha — is anyone really shocked ? Seriously this administration has been breaking every law known to America and now this… So whats new eh?

John Fernlund | 9/25/2008, 6:39 am EST

Is it too late to impeach him? Cheney too?

davelog dotcom | 9/25/2008, 8:31 am EST

Well, that explains the FIRST total they came up with… eleventy bazillion.

DirtyDennis | 9/25/2008, 8:47 am EST

Children, children, please, the art of negotiation. You get whatever you can get by asking for the moon.

And you can bet that ’spokesman’ was NOT part of the deliberating discussions. Nor will he/she EVER be, now. The Cons don’t suffer subordinates making them look bad to the great unwashed.

Justin Wright | 9/25/2008, 9:55 am EST

Nope, I dont think they are kidding.

Tico | 9/25/2008, 10:09 am EST

..and McCain wants to “suspend his campaign” so he doesn’t have to talk about this. Oh, yes, and dodge the VP debate. Can anyone really doubt that if he should somehow get into office, we will have more of this criminal mismanagement? Will he suspend his presidency when problems arise, as well?

ChooseyBeggar | 9/25/2008, 10:27 am EST

i can haz $700,000,000?

abe | 9/25/2008, 10:34 am EST

its like that comedian who did a joke about comparing the eloquence of civil war letters to iraq war letters

“we just wanted to choose a really high number”

what do you interpret the bush doctrine as? “his world view”

is there some kind of poison in the water? is it radio waves? the insanity and idiocy of the discourse in this country makes me want to start wearing a tin foil hat

James Harding | 9/25/2008, 10:44 am EST

This is nothing less than a blatant raid on the entire wealth of America while they still can get away with it. That is before the Bush thieves are thrown out by the people. This scheme has been sitting on the shelf for months ready to spring on the imbeciles on the hill, and the American people, as soon as it became evident that McCain would not be the next prez.

matt | 9/25/2008, 10:48 am EST

The bailout is about increasing investor confidence. You can’t really fault the treasury for not being able to produce hard science to back their number, the best they can do is guess how much it will take to convince investors that the market is still good. Now on the topic of ‘Should they have done it in the first place?’ – Hell no.

Scott | 9/25/2008, 10:52 am EST

hhhmmmm….I’m curious. The country and our 700 billion bailout, who here is a world class economist?? who here passed econ 101??? anyone?? I didn’t think so. or maybe you guys do want another depression, maybe you guys have just missed the taste of tomato soup. I believe the bailout needs to happen, but I do hope that the money doesn’t go to pay off the ceo’s that brought the banks/companies into failing, like the 2 in particular that went to run the obama and hillary campaigns….oh wait, they got out before this showed up…oh well I guess a good leader NEVER goes down with the ship.

rytis | 9/25/2008, 11:10 am EST

Why don’t we give the $700 billion as help to homeowners so they can pay their mortgages? Then everyone wins! Homeowners get to keep their houses, banks suddenly have good loans, not bad loans, credit flows again…

JOsh | 9/25/2008, 11:12 am EST

abe- that would be greg giraldo

NewportRacer | 9/25/2008, 11:16 am EST

Scott, you don’t understand this isn’t about facts or economics its about Bush bashing. I think Bush are been “proven” to have been involved in or responsible for:
Hurricanes
Allowing 9/11 (with his full knowledge)
Kennedy assassination
The Cold War
The Lindberg Kidnapping (Cheney did it)

BA in Econ here Scott, but I don’t remember many left wingers, in Econ classes. They usually left by the end of the drop period for Poli Sci classes.

Sue Gitte | 9/25/2008, 11:28 am EST

It has been a week now since Paulson, the person who stands to gain personally from the swindle more than any other individual, stated that this plan must be implemented within 48 hours or all out economic catastrophe would ensue. Well?

hadron collider | 9/25/2008, 11:29 am EST

Well, since I know the secrets of the universe – let me tell you – this is the worst administration in the history of the world – past, present, and future.

In the mean time, I could use some help in the form of a BAIL OUT of all of this liquid helium.

James | 9/25/2008, 11:32 am EST

With all the complaining and such here’s the worst part it it :

..
you ready ??

..
YOU, the american people elected him TWICE to run your country. Now whos is really to blame here ???????

BOY I’m glad I’m Canadian.

MarlboroCrawler | 9/25/2008, 11:45 am EST

Paulson knows as much about economics as the speedy smoker does. nada. He must have dropped Econ too (for acting classes, no doubt).

Sallad | 9/25/2008, 12:08 pm EST

This isn’t going to prevent a depression. It’s only going to postpone it. And, when the economy does finally crash from all the lawless looting it’s going to be a lot worse. The banks/companies failed. By their own doing. Let them fall and we’ll pick up the pieces again. Or, should we just keep pumping money into a seriously flawed and broken system, and hope that this time things will be different? They won’t.

Sallad | 9/25/2008, 12:10 pm EST

Doesn’t McCain also employ former employees of Freddie May? How many Wall St. lobbyist are on McCain’s campaign???

Sam Fielding | 9/25/2008, 12:18 pm EST

How can anyone intelligently advocate for this plan when its fundamental terms and conditions, let alone the details, evaluations, assumptions, recipients, amounts, timing, etc., have not even been made public; not to mention that it is being hyped by the same gang that sold us on WMDs, the Katrina debacle, a multi trillion dollar debt, massive job losses, and a disasterous war?

666763- | 9/25/2008, 12:28 pm EST

I would’ve said a ConyLove
instead 0f her husband

pedro | 9/25/2008, 12:44 pm EST

I think one operable word here is “disgust.” I feel disgust for the administration, Grouchypants and MILF, the solutions the pencil-necks are pushing, and myself for voting for Bush this last time. I think we’ve just crossed the border into Disgustopia and haven’t even entered the interior yet. I’d pray if I weren’t disgusted with religon too.

Jacques Debois | 9/25/2008, 1:01 pm EST

Corruption at it’s finiest… Thank goodness for Mike Malloy @ Novamradio – He hit it right on the nose, “let them fall on their face” Don’t give them a penny.

134KS | 9/25/2008, 1:02 pm EST

We Canadians shouldn’t be too quick to chastise Americans for voting in GW Bush when we voted in Stephen Harper who’s a practically a clone.

mister ed | 9/25/2008, 1:11 pm EST

you are all profoundly retarded.

spl0it | 9/25/2008, 1:14 pm EST

134KS – how does Harper have anything to do with this? He hasn’t messed up the economy, only fixed problems…. I don’t like some of his views, but he certainly isn’t a moron like Bush

GL | 9/25/2008, 1:20 pm EST

You guys are all idiots…lets be honest, all you non-wall street people will be hurt more than us if this isn’t approved….

Torchon | 9/25/2008, 1:21 pm EST

Whether or not a bail out is required or how much should be allowed is not nearly as incredulous as the inclusion of Section 8 of the proposal. To allow anyone the complete and total control over this money without oversight, recourse or accountability (which is what Section 8 would allow) is absolute lunacy. The fact that the Bush administration even proposed it is a clear reflection of their disdain and disrespect for the American people for which they were supposed to serve. Not be served by.

Would give your bank account and all your cash to someone, anyone, and say – do what you will, I have nothing to say about it?

Passing this bill without it addressing the problem that got us here in the first place-lack of regulation-is pointless and a waste of money.

Bruce | 9/25/2008, 11:58 pm EST

The irresponsible lenders and insurers need to go out of business, including FANNY and FREDDIE. They’ve been irresponsible and they deserve it. NO MORE INFLATION!! No more irresponsible lending.

Housing MUST!!! become affordable again! The big bankers and the greedy homeowners are just trying to keep alive the real estate bubble, regardless if most financially responsible people are priced out of the market. Home prices are still WAY too high, and have to still come way down to be affordable. If someone was financially irresponsible and bought at a way too high price with an ARM, then they made it WORSE FOR EVERYONE ELSE by driving up the price beyond what any financially responsible person could responsibly pay! So, if they lose their homes, they asked for it and deserve it.

There is already too much lending. It has to stop. People run up too much debts. They need to stop borrowing and start paying up. They need to be more financially responsible.

There needs to be more restrictive regulation of the Federal Reserve System, and reduced ability to create money and credit. That’s what caused the mess in the first place. Therefore, it is the Fed that needs to be investigated, reformed, and reined in.

PartyCrasher | 9/26/2008, 1:27 am EST

NewportRacer,
I like your style.

Scott,
Don`t drive yourself crazy trying to explain the facts. For the most part your talking to closed minds.

Of course I`m guilty of it also. The need to try and educate them becomes addictive. But frustrating.

Tim, you are doing a really evil thing with this kind of stuff. You know this “spokesman” has no power, that he was probably joking, and that the $700 billion amount came through some means of economic analysis. Your readers, however, do not. Again: dumbing down people for political gain.

Unfair? Understand something,
that spokesperson made that
statement with a straight face.
We know this because of the venue.
Maybe on the John Stewart show
you say something goofy, but when you are speaking to the Forbes
magazine people, you don’t make
jokes. Paulson and his crew haven’t
a clue of what to really do.
The market will crash anyway
whether they pump it up with
tax dollars or not. It’s a waste
of time.

TinFoilHat | 10/5/2008, 2:42 pm EST

James,
Sorry to disappoint you, but we didn’t actually elect him even once. The Republicans STOLE the last two elections using a combination of sleazy (and illegal) caging techniques and compromised electronic voting machines. They will try again next month. If this election is close, it will probably be stolen again.

People who monitor world-wide elections can tell you: If the final vote is more than 10% different from the exit polls, something stinky is going on.

Take a closer look back at 2000 and 2004. You will find that we were all deceived.

We claim to be spreading “democracy” around the world. In reality, our “democracy” is being taken from us one piece at a time. Beware Canada! Don’t let this happen to you. Put the screws to Harper and the conservatives, don’t let them get away with SH1T!
